Earth's utmost ends His power obey; The sky transcends. 14 His chosen saints to grace, PSALM 149. PRAISE ye the Lord, prepare your glad voice. His praise in the great assembly to sing: In our great Creator let Israel rejoice; And children of Sion be glad in their King. 3, 4 Let them his great name their nobles to bind. Praise him in heaven, where he his face, unveil'd, in perfect glory shows. 2 Praise him for all the mighty acts which he in our behalf has done; with which our praise should equal run. 3 Let the shrill trumpet's warlike voice make rocks and hills his praise rebound: Praise him with harp's melodious noise, and gentle psaltery's silver sound. 4 Let virgin troops soft timbrels bring, and some with graceful motion dance; Let instruments of various string, with organs join'd, his praise advance. 5 Let them who joyful hymns compose, to cymbals set their songs of praise; Cymbals of common use, and those that loudly sound on solemn day 6 Let all that vital breath enjoy, the breath he does to them afford, In just returns of praise employ: let every creature praise the Lord. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom earth and heaven adore, Be glory, as it was of old, is now, and shall be evermore. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and suffering saints on earth adore, Be glory, as in ages past, As now it is, and so shall last, To God the Father, Son, As Psalm 149 By angels in heaven all praise be address'd always shall be. HYMN I. The Song of the Angels. For the Nativity of our blessed Lord and Saviour. Luke ii. verse 8-15. THILE shepherds flocks by night, W watch'd their all seated on the ground, The Angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around. 2" Fear not," said he, for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind; "Glad tidings of great joy I bring "to you, and all mankind. S"To you, in David's town, this day "is born, of David's line, "The Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; "and this shall be the sign: 4" The Heavenly Babe you there shall "to human view display'd, [find, "All meanly wrapt in swathing bands, "and in a manger laid." 5 Thus spake the Seraph, and forthwith appear'd a shining throng Of Angels, praising God, who thus address'd their joyful song: 6 "All glory be to God on high, "and to the earth be peace; "Good-will, henceforth, from heaven to 66 begin, and never cease." HYMN 2. [men, The Song of Men responsive to the Song of the Angels. WHILE Angels thus, O Lord, rejoice, shall men no anthem raise? may we lose these useless tongues, when we forget to praise! 2 Then let us swell responsive notes, and join the heavenly throng; For angels no such love have known as we, to wake their song. 3 Good-will to sinful dust is shown, and peace on earth is given; For lo! the incarnate Saviour comes, with news of joy from heaven! 4 Merey and truth, with sweet accord, his rising beams adorn; Let heaven and earth in concert sing, 6 Till we attain those blissful realms, Wherefore do earthquakes cleave the ground? why hides the sun his rays? 2 Well may the earth astonish'd shake, and nature sympathize! The sun as darkest night be black! their Maker, Jesus, dies! 3 Behold fast streaming from the tree his all-atoning blood! Is this the Infinite? 'tis he, my Saviour and my God! 4 For me these pangs his soul assail, for me this death is borne; My sins gave sharpness to the nail, and pointed every thorn. 5 Let sin no more my soul enslave, break, Lord, its tyrant chain; O save me, whom thou cam'st to save, nor bleed, nor die in vain! SINCE HYMN 4. FOR EASTER-DAY. INCE Christ our Passover is slain, Let all, with thankful hearts, agree 2 Not with the leaven, as of old, and truth's unleaven'd bread. Christ being raised by Power Divine, and rescued from the grave, Shall die no more; death shall on him no more dominion have. 4 For that he died, 'twas for our sins he once vouchsafed to die: But that he lives, he lives to God for all eternity. 5 So count yourselves as dead to sin, but graciously restored, And made, henceforth, alive to God, CHRIS HRIST from the dead is raised, and made the First Fruits of the tomb; For, as by man came death, by man did resurrection come. 2 For, as in Adam all mankind 3 If then ye risen are with Christ, The things which are above, where at God's right hand is set. HYMN 7. For the same. COME, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove, with all thy quickening powers; Kindle a flame of sacred love in these cold hearts of ours. 2 See how we grovel here below, 3 In vain we tune our lifeless songs, in vain we strive to rise! Hosannas languish on our tongues, and our devotion dies. 4 Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove, with all thy quickening powers; Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love, and that shall kindle ours. HYMN 8. For the same. HE's come! let every knee be bent, all hearts new joy resume; Sing, ye redeem'd, with one consent, "The Comforter is come." 2 What greater gift, what greater love, could God on man bestow? Angels for this rejoice above, let man rejoice below! 3 Hail, blessed Spirit! may each sou! thy sacred influence feel; Do thou each sinful thought control, and fix our wavering zeal! 4 Thou to the conscience dost convey those checks which we should know; Thy motions point to us the way; thou giv'st us strength to go. HYMN 9. FOR THE HOLY COMMUNION. From the Revelation of St. John. *HOU, God, all giory, honour, power, art worthy to receive; 2 And worthy is the Lambh all power, honour, and wealth to gain, Glory and strength; who for our sins a sacrifice was slain! 3 All worthy thou, who hast redeem'd, and ransom'd us to God, From every nation, every coast, by thy most precious blood. 48 Blessing and honour, glory, power, by all in earth and heaven, To him that sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb be given. HYMN 10. For the same. MY God, and is thy table spread? and does thy cup with love o'erflow? Thither be all thy children led, and let them thy sweet inercies know! 2 Hail, sacred Feast, which Jesus makes ' rich banquet of his flesh and blood! Thrice happy he who here partakes that sacred stream, that heavenly food 3 Why are its dainties all in vain before unwilling hearts display'd? Was not for you the victim slain? are you forbid the children's bread ? 4 0 let thy table honour'd be, and furnish'd well with joyful guests! And may each soul salvation see, that here its holy pledges tastes! 5 Drawn by thy quickening grace. O Lord, in countless numbers let them come, And gather from their Father's board, the bread that lives beyond the tomb! 6 Nor let thy spreading Gospel rest, till through the world thy truth has run, Till with this bread all men be blest, who see the light, or feel the sun! HYMN 11. For the same, AND are we now brought near to God, who once at distance stood? And, to effect this glorious change. 3 Then let us join the heavenly choirs, to praise our heavenly King! O may that love which spread this board, inspire us while we sing 4 Glory to God in highest strains, "and to the earth be peace; | Good-will from heaven to men is come; "and let it never cease!"
