66 Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest !”

And when Jesus beheld Jerusalem, he wept over it and said, “If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace ! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another ; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.”

And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought ; saying unto them, “ It is written, My house is the house of prayer : but ye have made it a den of thieves." b

When the chief priests and the scribes heard the children crying in the temple, and saying, “ Hosanna to the son of David,” they were displeased, and said unto him, “ Hearest thou what

?” And Jesus saith unto them, “ Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise ?”c And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany, and he lodged there.

And on the morrow, (on the Monday,) as he entered into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon but leaves only; and he

said unto it, “ Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever.” And presently the fig tree withered away. This fig tree is an image of the Jewish people, which brought forth no fruit unto God.

THE KING'S WEDDING FEAST. On the same day, at Jerusalem, he spake the following parables : “ There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: and when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first : and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen ?

“They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render bim the fruits in their seasons.”

Matt. xxi. 17--22.

PARABLE OF THE KING'S WEDDING FEAST. Jesus saith unto them, “ Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.a

He spake also another parable unto them, saying, “ The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding : and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner : my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandize : and the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth : and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him band and foot, and take him

away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen." b

Another discourse of Jesus respecting the wickedness of the scribes and pharisees, he concluded with the following words : “ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not ! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till

And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts. And Jesus said unto them, “See ye not all these things ? Verily I say unto

There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

“And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Then let them which are in Judæa flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are

written may be fulfilled. For there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.”

And as he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew asked him privately : “ Tell us, when shall these things be ? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world ?” And Jesus answered and said unto them, “ Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

shall hear of wars and rumours of wars.

See that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. Then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there ; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west ; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
