CONCERNING THINGS TO COME.

His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said,

[graphic]

Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: and I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but

from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

"When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: and before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

"Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, have done it unto me.

"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a

stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." a

THE WASHING THE DISCIPLES' FEET, AND
THE LORD'S SUPPER.

IN the last days before his sufferings, Jesus taught in the temple in the day time, and he passed the night at Bethany. And it came to pass one evening, (probably on the Wednesday,) that Jesus arose from supper, and laid aside his garments, and took a towel and girded himself. He then poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. When he came to Peter, he said, "Lord, dost thou wash my feet?" Jesus answered him, "What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter." (This washing of the feet was to be a sign of that spiritual cleansing which all those need who desire to have part with Jesus.) Peter went on to say, "Thou shalt never wash my feet." Jesus said, "If I wash thee not, thou hast

no part with me." When Peter heard that, he said unto him, “ Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head." Jesus said unto him, "He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit; and ye are clean, but not all." For he knew well that Satan had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot

And therefore he said, "Ye are So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, "Know what I have done to you? Ye call me Master, and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them." a

On the first day of unleavened bread, when the passover was killed, (on the Thursday,) he sent Peter and John, saying, "Go, and prepare us the passover, that we may eat." And they said unto him, "Where wilt thou that we prepare?" And he said unto them, " Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. And shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he

shall show you a large upper room furnished : there make ready." b And the disciples went into the city, and found as he had said unto them. And they made ready the passover.

In the evening, Jesus went with his disciples to Jerusalem. On their way, it is probable that they passed by a vineyard. Then said Jesus, "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." c

And many more such important words did Jesus speak to his disciples in these last days before his sufferings, especially respecting the Holy Spirit, whom he promised to send to them. These discourses you may find in the Gospel of John.

As they sat at table, and were eating the over, Jesus said to his disciples, "Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me." And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, "Is it I?" and another said, "Is it I?" And he answered and said unto John xv. 1-6.
