Let us walk honestly as in the day, not in rioting, &c. not in strife and envying, &c.—Rom. xiii. 13.

Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.—James i. 19, 20.

The tongue is a little member, &c. a fire ; a world of iniquity, &c. setteth on fire the course of nature, &c. an unruly evil, full of deadly poison, &c. Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge amongst you? Let him shew out of a good conversation his works, with meekness of wisdom: but if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, &c. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual (or unnatural), devilish: for where envy and strife is, there is confusion (or tumults, or unquietuess), and every evil work.— James iii. 5, 6. 8. 13—16.

Grude not (or grieve not) one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned.—James v. 9.

Wherefore, laying aside all malice, &c. and envyings, and all evil speakings, &c.—1 Pet. ii. 1.

Whosoever hateth his brother, is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. —1 John iii. 15.

CHAP. LIX.

OF MURDER AND TAKING AWAY
THE LIFE OF MAN.

Because God accepted of Abel's offering, and had not respect unto Cain, and his offering, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him. And the Lord said, &c. What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to leceive thy brother's blood from thy hand, &c. And Latnech said unto his wives, &c. I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. — Gen, iv. 4 —6. 8. 10,11.23,24.

Your blood of your lives will I require, at the hand of every beast will I require it; and at the hand of man, at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.—Gen. ix. 5, 6.

Because Jacob had gotten his father's blessing, Esau hated him. And Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand, then will I slay my brother Jacob.— Gen. xxvii. 41.

Joseph's brethren hated him, and conspired against him to slay him.— Gen. xxxvii. 4. 11. 18.

Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. O my soul, comenot thou into their secret, &c. For in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will, &c. cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath for it was cruel.-Gen. xlix. 5-7. xxxiv. 25, &c.

Thou shalt not kill.-Exod. xx. 13.

He that smiteth a man, so that he die, he shall be surely put to death, &c. If a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour to slay him with guile, thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. — Exod. xxi. 12—14. Levit. xxiv. 17.

If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him, &c.—Exod. xxii. 2, 3.

If he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, &c. or with

throwing a stone, &c. or with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surelybe put to death, &c. If he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die; or in emnity smite him with his hand, that he die, he that smote him shall surely be put to death, for he is a murderer, &c. But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without lying in wait, or with any stone wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm; then the congregation shall judge, and deliver the slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, &c The murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. Moreover, ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, but he shall be surely put to death, &c So ye shall not pollute the land whereiu ye are; for blood, it defileth the land, and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein (or there can be no expiation for the land), but by the blood of him that shed it.—Numb. xxxv.l6,&c.Deut.xix.4—6.10—13. Exod. xxi. 12—15.

When David had met with Saul (who was pursuing his life) upon an advantage in the cave, and might have slain him, and was moved thereto; yet he refused, and said, The Lord avenge me; but mine hand shall not be upon thee.-l Sam. xxiv. 12,13. xxvi. 9-11. David's murder of Uriah, and judgments from God on David's house for it.—2 Sam. xi. xii.

The murdering of Naboth threatened and punished upon Ahab's bouse. —1 Kings xxi. xxii. 38.

Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, &c. and for the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, which the Lord would not pardon.— 2 Kings xxiv. 3, 4.

The murderer, rising with the light, killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.—Job xxiv. 14. Ps. x. 4. 8.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation.— Ps. li. 14. 2 Sam. xi.

They sleep not except they have done some mischief: and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.—Prov. iv. 16,17.

God hates him whose hands shed innocent blood.—Prov. vi. 16, 17.

Will ye steal, murder, &c. and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name? —Jer. vii. 9, 10.

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing,and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood: therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish.—Hosea iv. 2, 3.

The mariners, when they were to cast out Jonah into the sea, prayed to God, That they might not perish for his life, and that God would not lay innocent blood to their charge.— Jonah i. 14.

The chief priests and elders implicitly acknowledged their guilt of murdering Christ: for that, when Judas had agreed with them for thirty pieces of silver to betray him, and being struck with remorse for his execrable villany, and bringing back the money, said, I have betrayed innocent blood; when they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. Then they afterward said, It is not lawful to put those pieces of silver into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.—Matt. xxvii. 3—6.

Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, &c.—Matt. xv. 19.

You are of your father the devil, &c. he was a murderer from the beginning.—John viii. 44.

The barbarians thought that vengeance would not suffer a murderer to live.—Acts xxviii. 3, 4.

The works of the flesh are, envyings, murders, &c. of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.—Gal. v. 19.21.

Love one another: not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother: and wherefore slew he him? because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous, &c. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know, that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.—1 John iii. 11, 12.15.

Such who were dreadfully plagued, yet repented not of their murders, &c—Rev. ix. 21.

All murderers, Arc. shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.—Rev. xxi. 8.

Without are dogs, &c. murderers, &c.—Rev. xxii. 15.

CHAP. LX.

OF ADULTERIES.

Abraham and Jacob, by the consent of their wives, went in unto their maidens, and had children by them.— Gen. xvi. 1, &c. xxx. 1, &c.

Abimelech, kingofGerar, sent and took Sarah, Abraham's wife; but God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man for the woman which thou hast taken, for she is a man's wife: but Abimelech had not come near her, &c. He said, In the innocency of my hands have I done this: and God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know, &c. therefore suffered I thee not to touch her; now therefore, restore the man his wife, &c. if not, know that thou shalt surely die.—Gen. xx. 2—7.

Abimelech saw Isaac sporting with Rebecca his wife, and Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidest thou, she is my sister? &c. What is this thou hast done unto as? One of the people might lightly have lain ,with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife, shall surely be put to death. —Gen. xxvi. 8—11.

Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine.—Gen. xxxv. 22. xlix. 3, 4.

When Potiphar's wife tempted Joseph to have lain with her, he answered her, My master. &c. hath not kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? and it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not to her to lie by her, or to be with her, &c. she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me; and he left his garment in her hand, and fled and gat him out.—Gen. xxxix. 7—13.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.— Exod. xx. 14.

The man that committeth adultery with another man's wife; even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and adulteress shall surely be put to death.— Levit. xx. 10. xviii. 20. 22.

David's adultery with the wife of Uriah, and God's great displeasure against him for it.—2 Sam. xi. xii.

The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me; and disguiseth his face. —Job xxiv. 15.

If my heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door; let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her: for this is a heinous crime, &c. It is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase.—Job xxxi. 9—12.

By means of a whorish woman, a man is brought to a piece of bread, and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life. Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burnt? &c. so he that goeth in to his

neighbour's wife, whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent, &c. Whoso committeth adultery with a woman, lacketh understanding; hethatdoeth it, destroyeth his own soul; a wound and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man, therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.-Prov. vi. 26-29.32-35.

See the flattering and enticing words and language of an adulterous woman, whereby she deceived a foolish man.—Prov. vii. 7—21.

Such is the way of an adulterous woman, she eateth and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.—Prov. xxx. 20.

Will ye, &c. commit adultery, &c. and stand in this house before me? &c.—Jer. vii. 9, 10.

Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbour's wives, &c. I know, and am a witness, saitb the Lord.—Jer. xxix. 23.

How shall I pardon thee for this? &c. When I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses. They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife. Shall I not visit for these things, saith the Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged of such a nation as this?— Jer. v. 7—9.

I have seen thy adulteries and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills, in the fields: woe unto thee, 0 Jerusalem, wilt thou not be made clean?—Jer. xiii. 27.

The Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because, &c. by swearing, &c. committing of adultery, they break out, &c. therefore shall the land mourn,&c.—Hosea iv. 1—3.

Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery, and whoso marrieth her which is put away, doth commit adultery.—Matt. xix. 9. Markx. 9—12. 19.

Let not the wife depart from her husband; but, and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband; and let not the husband put away his wife.—1 Cor. vii. 10, 11.

Be not deceived, neither fornicators, &c. nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, &c. shall inherit the kingdom of God.—1 Cor. vi. 9, 10.

The works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, &c. I tell you, that they which do such things, shall not inherit the kingdom of God.— Gal. v. 19—21. Eph. v. 5, 6. Col. iii. 5, 6.

Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.— Matt. v. 28.

Jesus said unto the woman taken In adultery, Neither do 1 condemn thee: go, and sin no more.—John viii. 11.

Whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.—Heb. xiii. 4.

CHAP. LXI.

OF FORNICATION AND LAs-
CIV10UsNESS.

The lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: but her end is bitter as wormwood, &c. remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house; lest, &c. thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and and thy body are consumed.—Prov. v. 3, 4. 8. 11.

Keep thee from the evil woman, and lust not after her beauty, &c. for

by means of a whorish woman, a man is brought to apiece of bread.—Prov. vi. 24—26.

I discerned, &c. a young man void of understanding, &c. and there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, &c. so she caught him and kissed him, and with an impudent face and much flattering words, &c. forced him, and he went after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter.—Prov. vii. 7. 10. 13. 21, 22. ix. 13—15.

The mouth of a strange woman is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein.—Prov. xxii. 14. xxiii. 27, 28. Eccles. vii. 26.

Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroy eth kings.—Prov. xxxi. 3.

Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, &c. fornications, &c. these are the things which defile a man.— Matt. xv. 19, 20.

God gave them over to a reprobate mind, &c. being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, &c.-Rom. i. 28, 29.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God? &c. If any man defile the templeof God, him shall God destroy. —1 Cor. iii. 16, 17. vi. 19, 20.

It is reported commonly, that there is fornication among you, &c. I wrote unto you not to company with fornicators, &c. If any man that is called a brother, be a fornicator, with such an one, no not to eat.-l Cor. v. 1.9.11.

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? be not deceived, neither fornicators, &c. now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord, &c. your bodies are the members of Christ: shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid: what? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? &c. flee fornication: every sin that a man doeth is without the body,
