The teachers live together in the schoolhouse that forms part of the building. Haydock, Mixed.-Building ample and substantial. Taught by an elderly mistress and her daughter, both untrained. One girl in the 1st class was 15 years old, two 14, three 13, three 12, three 11; the 2 oldest boys 10 years old: 72 girls and 43 boys. 1. In 7 classes; the last infants; well classed. 2. Orderly and moderately attentive; tidy. 4. The girls read fluently, but not with good expression; the 2 eldest boys read moderately well; the lower classes did not read well for their years. A few only spelt fairly. Writing not of good character, nor the books neat. Catechism fairly repeated, but little acquaintance with its meaning, or, with Scripture history. Arithmetic very imperfectly known. Heywood, Heady Hill, St. James'.-A good school building; the site unfenced, from a want of funds, which sadly affects the efficiency of the school. The district a very low one. Heywood, Heady Hill, St. James', Boys'.-2. In indifferent order. 4. The writing, dictation, arithmetic, spelling, and repetition of the Commandments (the Catechism is not taught), show painstaking, but the Scriptural knowledge and general intelligence are small. 5. The master was taken from a mill; he seems a person of good natural ability, and with some energy, but has great difficulties. The school sadly wants books and apparatus. Heywood, Heady Hill, St. James'.-The Girls' school is in the same room under a mistress, who seems intended to be only a sewing mistress, but has practically charge of the whole instruction. The reading and repetition of Commandments are not bad, but the knowledge and intelligence of the children are very little. Heywood, St. James', Factory school for both sexes.-The girls sit at one end of the room, and are taught sewing, &c., by a mistress. 2. Very good; tone excellent (considering). 4. A few spell fairly; Catechism fairly repeated and understood; writing neat; arithmetic good. The Scriptural knowledge and general intelligence of a few (whole-day scholars almost exclusively) is fair, but that of the rest very low for the most part. 5. The master is an intelligent, instructed, active teacher, obliged to confine his instruction to the most elementary subjects, with the conscious impossibility of doing much for such numbers of such children in 24 hours daily. Heywood, St. James', Infants'.-Very few children for such a locality. 2. Tone and order good; the children cheerful. 4. Reading fair; no writing or ciphering, though 3 girls are above 9 years old and 2 above 8; spelling indifferent; no Catechism learned, but the Commandments well repeated; Scriptural knowledge of one good, of the others moderate; notions of numbers, and tables, fair. A pleasing mistress, formerly in the infant school at Leigh. Heywood, St. Luke's.-A Mixed school, in the lower of two large rooms; mistress teaches sewing and reading to the lower classes of girls in the morning. Books and apparatus much wanted. 1. Monitors only used in the 4th, 5th, and 6th classes for reading. 2. Pretty good; as in the tone also. 4. Spelling and repetition of Catechism fair. Writingbooks fairly kept. One boy answered well and intelligently upon Scripture, several girls fairly; the rest indifferently. 5. The master was in a shop, and was mathematical teacher to the Mechanics' Institute; has had no regular training. He receives the pence (about 407.), and is parish clerk. The sewing mistress receives 10l. a year. Sundries. . TOTAL. Heywood, Mount Street.-1. A mixed school in four classes. 2. An appearance of moderate order, but the children not attentive. 3. Reading fair; writing fair; and books tolerably neat; dictation very fair. Arithmetic not advanced, but the lower rules moderately well done. Catechism fairly repeated, and a few know something of its meaning. Very few know much of Scripture, or understand what they read. 5. The master seems a sensible and instructed man, and his wife active, and not unacquainted with her duties. Their income is very small, and the school poorly supplied with books and apparatus. The school languishing from the confirmed bad health of the master. The front and floor of the school-house, and the master's house, are in a very bad state from damp. Hollinwood (New School), Boys'.-2. Fair. 3. Imperfect and irregular. 4. Fairly and not unintelligently given. Far too little attention is given to Scripture; the children know very little about it. Too much time is given to arithmetic. 5. The master has much rough activity. Hollinwood (New School), Girls'.-1. Chief teaching seems in one large class; the smaller children being meanwhile nearly unemployed. 2. Good. 3. Indifferent. 4. Unintelligent. 5. Mistress is wife to the master; seems kind, and desirous of doing well, but untrained. Attendance was small, on account of bad weather. The children's payments vary from 3d. to 6d. The school is nearly self-supported. There is another small Church school in the district. Hollinwood (Old School), Boys.'-A school with a small endowment. 1. None which provides for the continued activity of the scholars. 2. Very little. 4. A few read fairly, but the younger children are backward in this. A few write fairly, but books not neat. Some have gone through a good deal of arithmetic, but are not ready at working it, or intelligently acquainted with it. Catechism badly repeated, and not understood. Very little acquaintance with Scripture; none with other usual subjects. The school, and all about it, unneat and disorderly. Leigh.-School-building good and well furnished, with excellent playgrounds. Payments 2d., 3d., or 4d. Leigh, Mixed.-5 boys 13 years old, two 12, two others 11, two girls 11 years old, and two 10. Parents purchase all but slates and reading books. Attendance tolerably punctual and regular. 1. In 4 classes. Children very orderly, attentive, and tidy; reading and spelling good; writing very good and neat; dictation very good; abstracts good; arithmetic throughout very good; the boys explained well the processes in multiplying by a number consisting of several digits; geography good; grammar, including syntax, very good, and fair even in the 2nd class: several draw landscapes and maps pleasingly; singing seems successfully taught by using numerals instead of notes. Various lessons are systematically prepared at home. The master was trained at Chichester National school. A sewing mistress is employed three hours a day. Leigh, Infants'.-Mistress has no assistant. Attendance tolerably punctual and regular. Children tidy, in good order, cheerful and very well-behaved. The usual exercises well gone through. The mistress 21 years of age. She was brought up here; is animated and kind. Leigh, Bedford District.-School-rooms under the church; not cheerful. Good playgrounds across the churchyard. Leigh, Bedford District, Mixed.-15 present were girls; 49 half-day scholars. A sewing mistress, engaged by the master, comes 6 half days in the week; so that the half-day scholars have at least two hours' sewing three times a-week. 1. In 7 classes: unpaid monitors; each child of the two 1st classes serves about one week in four. 2 Very fair order and attention; children clean and neat, considering; attendance punctual and regular. 3. Reading, writing, and spelling, very fair; dictation good. Girls do no arithmetic. Two boys worked interest sums. Geography very fair. History known by a few fairly. Three boys fairly acquainted with the parts of speech. Catechism well repeated; scriptural knowledge fair; and a few very fairly acquainted with geography of Scripture. Lessons are learned at home. 5. The master, aged 26, was in a warehouse at Warrington; then two years in model school there; thence came here 34 years ago. He is assisted by a young man, who wishes to become a teacher. Leigh Bedford District, Infants'.-Children healthy and cheerful, but in indifferent order; clean, considering. Attendance moderately punctual and fairly regular. They sing fairly, but their marching, &c., were indifferently done. Progress in reading but moderate. Catechism well repeated, and the elder children have a pretty fair acquaintance with Scripture history. About a dozen girls learn to knit and sew. The young mistress was 15 months at Warrington school; came here last year. Seems kind to the children and anxious to do well. Littleborough, Boys' and Girls.'-An addition to the schoolroom has been made, and fittings supplied, with aid from the Privy Council. Room not sufficiently lofty, nor well ventilated. School mixed, without an assistant mistress. Much of its support is at present thrown on the clergyman. Two-fifths of the children work in factories; several are infants; all healthy. 1. In six classes. 2. Order moderate, but attention fair. 4. Two eldest boys very superior to the rest. In arithmetic they are led on too fast; spelling viva voce good; in writing from dictation, indifferent. Two oldest fairly acquainted with Scripture; the rest indifferently. The bible not read; the inferiority of the factory children very striking. 5. The master was 18 months at Chester Training College; has been here 9 months; the numbers greatly increased since; he seems desirous, and likely, to do well. Manchester, St. Barnabas', Boys'.-2. Discipline and tone moderate. 4. Instruction must not be judged from results, without considering the low state of the population, and the short time (about 2 months) that the master has been here. Reading and writing fair; writing from dictation, and abstracts, pretty good; arithmetic good; information and intelligence not great. Manchester, St. Barnabas', Girls'.-2. Order and tone very pleasing. 4. Reading good, writing good, and books neat; arithmetic bad; information and intelligence good. 5. A very pleasing mistress, to whom the condition of the school does credit. Manchester, All Souls', Ancoats, Boys'.-I. Unpaid monitors changed weekly. 2. Everything connected with order and routine satisfactory. 4. Progress of lower classes not satisfactory; writing-books neat; spelling fair; catechism well repeated; knowledge of Scripture and general subjects indifferent; intelligence low, still a good deal is taught. 5. The master is young and improving; had a private school, and was afterwards for 3 months at Salford model school. The master has an evening school 3 days in the week. Manchester, All Souls', Ancoats, Infants'.-1. For reading, careful; elder girls learn also of master. 2. Children neat, orderly, and cheerful; many not from poorest class. 4. Good. Elder girls read well, write fairly, and have an intelligent knowledge of Scripture; a few are 11 years old. 5. Mistress taken from a mill, and trained at Granby-row for 16 weeks; a pleasing efficient teacher. Manchester, St. James'.-A good set of new school-buildings, still defective in fittings and apparatus. Manchester, St. James', Boys'.-1. Unpaid monitors, each acting about every fourth week. 2. Good; tone good. 3. Spelling of the 1st class only is good; maps neatly drawn by 6 boys; catechism fairly repeated and understood; scriptural knowledge and general intelligence of only a few is satisfactory. 5. Not regularly trained, but a pleasing and apparently educated person. Manchester, St. James', Girls'.—1. Till lately no pupils thought forward enough for monitors. 2. Good. Tone very good; the girls neat, quiet, and orderly. 3. As in boys' school, the instruction and intelligence partially good only. The schools have been opened only 15 months. 5. A pleasing person, educated in model school at Cheltenham; wife of the master. Neither of them seems in strong health. Manchester, St. James', Infants'.-Children come from their homes unneat, but in the school everything was in neat order. The mistress seems very kind, and anxious about her duties; but has had little training.
