JUPITER ET ALCMENE.

L'aventure d'Amphitryon et de Sosie est tellement connue, qu'il n'est pas nécessaire de la rappeler; d'ailleurs on peutl

retrouver dans la comédie de Plaute, ou bien dans celle de Molière.

Le peintre Jules Romain nous représente ici deux scènes distinctes qui se passent, l'une dans l'intérieur de la maison, et l'autre sur la place publique. A droite, on voit Jupiter assis sur le lit d'Alcmène qui croit être avec Amphitryon. Le manteau de Jupiter est rouge, les rideaux du lit sont verts, et le voile d'Alcmène est bleu. De l'autre côté du tableau on voit Mercure assis sur le seuil de la porte, et s'opposant à l'entrée de Sosie, lorsque celui-ci, après avoir long-temps disserté sur ce qu'il va raconter de la bataille qu'il n'a pas vue, se détermine enfin à dire : « Allons, j'entre chez nous, pour faire part à ma maîtresse de ce que mon maître m'a chargé de lui dire. Mais quel est cet homme que j'aperçois devant la maison ? å l'heure qu'il est, cela m'est suspect.

Ce carton a fait autrefois partie de la galerie du PalaisRoyal, il a été gravé par Nicolas Tardieu.

The adventure of Amphitryon and Sosius is so well known, that it is not necessary to speak of it, besides it may be met with in the comedy of Plautus, or in that of Molière.

The artist here presents us with two distinct scenes which are passing, the one in the interior of the house, and the other on the public place. On the right is seen Jupiter, seated on the bed of Alcmena, who believes herself with Amphitryon. The mantle of Jupiter is red, the curtains of the bed are green, and Alcmena's veil is blue. On the other side of the picture, Mercury is seen seated at the threshold of the door, opposing the entrance of Sosius, when the latter after making a long dissertation about what he is going to relate, about a battle that he had not seen, at length says « Well, I am going in to the house to tell my mistress of what my master directed me to inform her! » But who is that man that I see before the house? At this hour that appears to me suspicious. »

This cartoon formed part of the Gallery of the Palais Royal formerly, and has been engraved by Nicolas Tardieu.
