133. The examination shall be written, oral, and practical.

The Practical (Clinical) Examination in Medicine and Surgery shall be conducted in the wards of a hospital by the Examiners of those branches.

The Candidate shall, in addition, perform such of the minor operations of surgery as may be required in the outdoor dispensary of the Hospital at the time of the examination, and as the Examiners may select.

Each Candidate shall perform, if it be possible, three capital operations upon the dead subject.

He shall also apply apparatus for great surgical injuries, and explain the objects to be attained by them, as well as the best manner of effecting those objects.

134. Candidates will be examined in accordance with the following scheme :-

Candidates failing to obtain one-third of the marks in each subject or one-half of the aggregate number shall

not pass. 135. On Monday, in the week following the conclusion of the Clinical examination, the Examiners shall arrange in two divisions, each in alphabetical order, such of the candidates as have passed, and a diploma under the Seal of the University, and signed by the Chancellor, shall be delivered to each Candidate. All candidates who obtain 75 per cent. or more of the aggregate number of marks shall be placed in the first division. Form of Tabular Statement to be submitted by the Examiners.

VIII. EXAMINATION FOR DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF MEDICINE AND MASTER IN SURGERY.

136. Candidates for the Degree of M. B. and C. M. are required to have passed the First Examination in Arts of this or of some other recognized University,* and subse

quently to have been engaged during five years in their professional studies. They shall be required to pass one preliminary scientific and two professional examinations. PRELIMINARY SCIENTIFIC EXAMINATION.

137. A Preliminary Scientific Examination shall be held in Madras once a year commencing on the second Monday in July.

138. Applications for admission to this examination must reach the Registrar not later than the 1st of May preceding.

139. No Candidate shall be registered unless he have previously paid a fee of Twenty Rupees. Candidates failing to pass one examination may be admitted to subsequent examinations on payment of a like fee of Twenty Rupees on each occasion.

140. Candidates must have completed their 18th year, and shall produce certificates of having attended courses of lectures, as follows

Chemistry, (Inorganie, with Elements of Organic Chemistry)-one course of, at least, 100 lectures.

Botany-one course of, at least, 40 lectures.
Practical Chemistry-one course.

141. These certificates shall be transmitted to the Registrar at least fourteen days before the date of examination. 142. The examination in systematic Botany shall comprise the following natural orders only: Ranunculaceæ, Papaveraces, Cruciferæ, Malvacea, Rutacea (includes Aurantiaceae), Leguminosa, Rosacea, Myrtaceæ, Cucurbitaceæ, Umbelliferæ, Rubiaces, Composite, Apocyneæ, Asclepiades, Loganiacea, Gentianaceae, Convolvulaces, Solanaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Labiata, Euphorbiaces, Piperaces, Coniferæ, Palmacea, Liliaceae, Scitamineæ, Gramineæ, and Filices.

143. Candidates will be examined in accordance with the following scheme :

144. Candidates failing to obtain one-fourth of the marks in Latin, one-third in each of the other subjects, and one-half of the aggregate number, shall not pass.

145. At the end of one week from the last day of the examination, the Examiners shall arrange the successful Candidates in the order of merit as ascertained by the numerical results of the examination.

146. The First M. B. and C. M. Examination shall be held in Madras once a year, commencing on the fourth Monday in July.

147. Applications for admission to this examination. must reach the Registrar not later than the 1st of May preceding..

148. No Candidate shall be registered unless he have previously paid a fee of Thirty Rupees. Candidates failing to pass one examination may be admitted to subsequent examinations on payment of a like fee of Thirty Rupees on each occasion.

149. Candidates must produce certificates of having. passed the Preliminary Scientific Examination at least two years previously, and of having attended the following

Courses :

Anatomy-two courses of, at least, 100 lectures each.

Physiology-two courses of, at least, 80 lectures each. Materia Medica and Therapeutics-one course of, at least, 100 lectures.

Comparative Anatomy-one course of, at least, 40 lec

tures.

150. They must also produce certificates of having attended a course of Practical Pharmacy at a College, Hospital, or Dispensary, and of having dissected the whole human body.

151. These certificates shall be transmitted to the Registrar at least fourteen days before the date of examination
