whom they of the children of Is'-ra-ěl did value;

10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.

11 And Je'-sus stood before the governor and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Je'-sus said unto him, Thou sayest.

12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

13 Then said Pi-lăte unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

is released.

22 Pi'-lăte saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jē ́sus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

24 When Pi'-lăte saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

26 T Then released he Bär-ǎb'

14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. 15 Now at that feast the go-bas unto them: and when he had was wont to release scourged Je'-sus, he delivered unto the people a prisoner, him to be crucified. whom they would.

16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Bärǎb'-bǎs.

17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pi'-late said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Bär-ab-bǎs, or Je'-sus which is called Christ?

18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Bär-ab'băs, and destroy Jē'-sus.

21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Bär-ǎb'-băs.

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Je'-sus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cy-re'-né, Si'mon by name him they compelled to bear his cross. │* 33 And when they were come

unto a place called Gŏl'-gŏ-thă, | Jē'-sus cried with a loud voice, that is to say, a place of a saying, E'-li, E-li, lä-mä săskull, bach'-tha-ni? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

34 T They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 36 And sitting down they watched him there;

37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JE-SUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Is'-ra-ěl, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him for he said, I am the Son of God.

44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

46 And about the ninth hour

47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Eli'-ǎs.

48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether E-li'-ǎs will come to save him.

50 ¶ Jē'-sus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Je'-sus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Je'-sus from Găl'-1-lée, ministering unto him:

56 Among which was Mâr'-y Măg'-dă-lene, and Mar'-y the mother of James and Jo'-ses, and the mother of Zĕb'-ě-dée's children.

57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Årim-ă-thæ'-ă, named Jō'-sěph,

who also himself was Je'-sus' of the Lord descended from

disciple:

58 He went to Pi'-lăte, and begged the body of Je'-sus. Then Pi'-lăte commanded the body to be delivered.

59 And when Jo'-seph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

61 And there was Mâr'-y Măg'dă-lene, and the other Mâr'-y, sitting over against the sepulchre.

62 T Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Phar'-I-sées came together unto Pi'-lăte,

63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

65 Pi'-lăte said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

CHAPTER 28.

N the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mâr'-y Mag'-da-lene and the other Mâr'-y to see the sepulchre.

2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel

heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Je'-sus, which was crucified.

6 He is not here: for he is

risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Găl'-i-lée; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Je'sūs met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

10 Then said Je'-sus unto them, Be not afraid go tell my brethren that they go into Gål'-i-léè, and there shall they

see me.

11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,

13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

14 And if this come to the

17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

18 And Je'-sus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 T Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

of God;

2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

5 And there went out unto him all the land of Jû-dæ'-ă, and they of Jě-rû'-să-lěm, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jôr-dăn, confessing their sins.

6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

7 And preached, saying, There

8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

9 And it came to pass in those days, that Je'-sus came from Năz'-a-reth of Găl'-i-lée, and was baptized of John in Jôr'-dăn.

10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

12 And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilder

ness.

13 And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Sa'-tăn; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

14 Now after that John was

Christ healeth many ST. MARK, 1. put in prison, Je'-sus came into Gal'-1-lee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

16 Now as he walked by the sea of Gǎl'-1-lee, he saw Si-mon and An'-drew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of

men.

18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

19 And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zěb'-ě-dée, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zěb'-ě-dée in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

21 And they went into Căpĕr-nă-um; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. 22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Je'-sus of Năz'-a-rěth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

25 And Je'-sus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Găl'I-lée.

29 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Si'-mon and Ăn'drew, with James and John.

30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.

31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. 33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.

34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. 36 And Si-mon and they that were with him followed after him.

37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.

38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns,
