God himself, by the Prophet .saiah, declares, ch. ii. 1 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that Day; For the day of the Lord of hosts Jhall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he Jhall be brought low. The Wise man in like manner, Prov. iii. 34, Surely ( fays he ) he fortieth the scorners, but gSveth grace unto the lowly. Which pasiage is, almost in the very fame words, quoted by St Peter, 1 Pet. v. 5, Be clothed with humility; For God repsteth the Proud, and giveth Grace unto the humble. The

Pride Pride is always represented in Scripture, Sje R M. as being thus particularly hateful to God; XIis because it usually signifies, and always"0^ includes, something of that Presumptuousness, that presuming to transgress insolently and with a high Hand, which is the greatest Aggravation of Sin, and the most directly opposite to that meek and humble Spirit, which trembleth at God's Wordt which studies his Will, and is always fearful of disobeying it.
