PREFACE. ALTHOUGH the arguments contained in the following appeal have been framed with the utmost attention in my power, for the purpose of suggesting a security against evils anticipated from the remission of the civil disabilities affecting Roman Catholics, I cannot too strongly or uncompromisingly explain, that, in my own opinion, the Acts of Union, with all their various and solemn sanctions, and the Coronation Oath (which directly calls upon the Monarch of this country to resist any spoliation of Church property, in the fair sense of that term,) combined with the repudiation, under the sanction of an oath, of all objectionable opinions and intentions on the part of the Roman Catholics, do present a solid and substantial security.
