5. Simon said to him, Master, we toiled all the night, and have taken nothing, yet at thy word I will let down the net.

6. And having so done, they inclosed so great a multitude of fishes, that their net brake.

7. Then they beckoned to their partners in the other ship to come and help them. Who came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

8. Which Simon Peter seeing, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, O Lord, for I am a sinner.

9. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of fishes. 10. And so was also James and John, Zebedee's sons, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men (by converting them.)

11. And having brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

12. And being in a certain city, lo, a man full of leprosy, seeing Jesus, fell on his face, and entreated him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 13. Then he stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. 14. But he charged him, saying, tell no man: but go and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony (of thy gratitude).

15. But so much the more went his fame abroad: and great multitudes came to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

16. Then he retired into the wilderness and prayed.

17. Again on a certain day, as he was teaching, there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, (not as doers of the word, but cavillers,) being come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and

Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was there to heal them (of the diseases of the soul and body.)

18. And lo, some brought in a bed a man having the palsy; and they sought to bring him in, and lay him before him.

19. But could not for the multitude, so they went upon the house top, and let him down through the tiling, with his couch, into the midst before Jesus.

20. And seeing their faith, he said to him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

21. Then the scribes and Pharisees reasoned, saying, Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?

22. But Jesus perceived their thoughts, and replied to them, What reason ye in your hearts? 23. It is in my power, but more difficult, to remove sin, the cause of disease, and so make the effect to cease. 24. But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins, I say to the sick of the palsy, Arise, take up thy couch, and go to thine house.

25. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his house, glorifying God.

26. Then they were all amazed, and they glori fied God; being filled with fear, they said, We have seen admirable things to-day.

27. After these things he went out, and seeing a publican named Levi, sitting at the custom house, he said to him, Follow me. 28. Then he left all, rose up and followed him.

29. Now Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and a great company of publicans, and others, sat with them. 30. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? 31. Then Jesus said, to them, The whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. T

33. Then some said to him, Why do John's. disciples fast and pray often, and likewise the Pharisees disciples, but thine eat and drink? 34. He replied, Can ye make the companions of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

36. He spake also a parable to them: No man puts a patch of a new garment on an old; for the piece from the new agrees not with the old, but rends it. 37. And no man puts new wine into old bottles; else it will burst them, and be spilled, and the bottles perish. 38. But new wine must be put into new (leathern) bottles; and both are preserved. 39. No man also, having drunk old wine, immediately desireth new; for he saith, The old is better. (My disciples must proceed gradually; but they have less of froth or shew, and more of the substance of religion than the Pharisees, who are only like new wine, See Matth. ix. 17.)

CHAP. VI.

CHRIST REPROVETH THE PHARISEES.

ON the second festival Sabbath of the first great solemnity, he went thro' the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and rubbing them in their hands, ate.

2. Then certain of the Pharisecs said to them, Why do ye what is not lawful on the Sabbath? 3. But Jesus said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David and his companions did, when hungry. 4. How he went into God's house, and ate the sacred bread, and gave also to them that were with him; which is not lawful for any to eat but the priests alone? 5. He said also to them, The Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.

6. And on another Sabbath, he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

7. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him whether he would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against him. 8. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man with the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he did so. 9. Then Jesus said to them, I will ask you one thing; Is not he who neglects the good he has in his power to do, on the Sabbath, (or any other day), guilty of the evil that thence ensues? Is not he that does not save life, when in his power, as guilty of the loss of it, as if he took it away? 10. And, looking around on them all, he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand; then he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other.

11. Now they were filled with rage; and communed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

12. In those days, he went to a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13. And when it was day, he called his disci ples, of whom he chose twelve, whom also he named Apostles; 14. Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip, and Nathaniel Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon called Zelotes, 16. And Jude the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, the traitor.

Then he came down with them and stood in the plain, with the company of his disciples, and a great multitude out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea-cost of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases, 18. They also who were vexed with unclean spirits, and they were healed. 19. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for virtue went ont of him, and healed them all.

20. Now looking on his disciples, (he repeated part of Matthew v. vi. vii.) saying, Blessed be ye

poor in spirit, (or humble ones): for yours is the kingdom of God. 21. Blessed are ye who hunger now (after righteousness): for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye who weep now (with godly sorrow): for ye shall exult for joy. 22. Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and separate you from their company, and reproach you, and reprobate your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. 23. Rejoice in that day, yea, leap for joy; for, behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in like manner did their fathers to the prophets, 24. But wo to you that are rich! for ye have no other consolation. 25. Wo to you that are full (of the world's good things, without doing good!) for ye shall hunger (eternally). Wo to you that laugh (with the fool's mirth) now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26. Wo to you when all men speak well of you! for so did their fathers of the false prophets.

27. Now I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, (so as to wish them well,) do good to them who hate you; 28. Bless them that curse you, and pray for them who injuriously treat you. 29. Bear small injuries; and be ready to receive a second, rather than revenge the first. 30. Give to every man that asketh of thee (in his need), and of him that taketh away thy goods, (in his necessity), ask them not again. 31. And as ye would have men do to you, do ye so to them likewise. 32. For if ye love them who love you, what thanks fye have ye? for sinners also love those who love them. 33. And if ye do good to them who do good to you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

34. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend (to the needy,) hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of
