two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people, 14. For they were about five thousand men. Then he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company, 15. So they all sat down.

16. Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes; and, looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17. And they ate and were all filled; and there was taken up of remainders twelve baskets. (Being much more than at first).

18. Afterwards, whilst he was in private, praying, his disciples being with him; he asked them, Whom say the people that I am? 19. They said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, That one of the old prophets is risen again. 20. He said to them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter replied, the Christ of God. 21. Then he strictly charged them to tell this to no man; 22. Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23. He said also to them all, If any man will come after me let him deny himself (all the world's good things, and take up his cross daily, to suffer all its evils) and follow me. 24. For whoever shall save his life (shall lose the enjoyment of it) but whoever will lose his life for my sake, shall save it (to life eternal). 25. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26. For whoever shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, with the holy angels. 27. But I tell you truly, There be some standing here who shall not die, till they see the kingdom of God, (established by the abolishing of the Jewish state.)

28. Now about eight days after these things, he

went with Peter, James, and John, to a mountain to pray. 29. And as he prayed, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was glistering white. 30. And, behold, two men, Moses and Elias talked with him; 31. Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease, which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32. But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep: however, awaking, they saw his glory, and the two men standing with him.

33. And as they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

34. While he thus spake, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 35. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

36. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they concealed it, and told no man in those days any of the things they had

seen.

37. And the next day, being come down from the mountain, much people met him.

38. And lo, a man of the multitude cried out, Master, I beseech thee, look on my son; for he is mine only child. 39. And lo, a spirit taketh him, and he cries out suddenly; and it convulseth him, and he foameth: and bruising him, hardly departs from him. 40. And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; but they could not. 41. Then Jesus said, O unbelieving and perverse generation! how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 42. And as he was coming, the devil dashed him on the ground and convulsed him, but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the lad, and delivered him to his father.

43. Now all were amazed at the mighty power

of God. But, while all wondered at the things Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44. Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. But they understood not this matter, for it was hid from them, that they perceived it not; and they feared to ask him of it.

46. Then was among them a reasoning who of them should be greatest. 47. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, placed a child by him, 48. And said to them, Whoever shall receive this child in my name, receiveth me; and whoever shall receive me, receiveth him that sent me; for he that is least among you all, shall be great.

49. Now John said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us. 50. But Jesus said, Forbid him not; for he that is not against us, is for us.

51. Now when his time to be received up approached, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52. And sent messengers before him, who entered into a Samaritan village, to make ready for him. 53. But they received him not, because his face was for Jerusalem.

54. Now his disciples, James and John, seeing this said, Lord, wilt thou have us command fire to come from heaven to consume them, even as Elias did? 55. But he turned, and rebuked them, saying, Ye know not what spirit ye are of. 56. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. So they went to another village.

75. Now as they went in the way, a certain man said to him, Lord, I will follow thee whereever thou goest. 58. But Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59. Now he said to another, Follow me. But he replied, Lord, suffer me first to go and have my

father buried. 60. Jesus saith unto him, Let the (spiritually) dead, bury those that are (naturally) dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61. Another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but permit me first to take leave of them at my house. 62. Jesus saith to him, A man having put his hand to the plough, and looking behind him, spoils his work, (as he cannot look before him also;) and no man that acts so between God and the world, is fit for the kingdom of God.

CHAP. X.

CHRIST SENDS OUT SEVENTY DISCIPLES.

AFTER these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them, two together, before him, into every place whither he himself would come. 2. For he said to them, The (gospel) harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, to send labourers into his harvest. 3. Go; behold, I send you as lambs into the midst of wolves. 4. Carry neither purse, nor bag, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way. 5. And into whatever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 6. And if it be worthy of peace, it shall obtain it; if not, ye shall obtain the reward of your labour. 7. And in that house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give; for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. 8. And into whatever city ye enter, and they receive you, cat what is set before you: 9. And heal the sick therein; and say to them, The kingdom of God is come near to you. 10. But into whatever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go out into its streets, and say, 11. Even the very

dust of your city, which cleaveth to us, we do wipe off, (as polluted), for a testimony against you: yet be assured of this, that the kingdom of God is come

near to you. 12. But I tell you, It shall be more tolerable at the last day for Sodom, than for that city. 13. Wo to thee, Chorazin! wo to thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented of old, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven (by high gospel privileges), shalt be thurst down to hell. 16. He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.

17. Now the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject to us thro' thy name.

18. But he said to them, I beheld Satan's dominion fall (speedily) as lightning from heaven, (before you). 19. Behold I give you authority (over the old serpent, Satan, and his venomous agents) to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you (in your real interests). 20. Yet rejoice not that the spirits are subject to you; but rather rejoice that your names are written in hea

ven.

21. In that hour Jesus rejoiced greatly in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and carth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent (of this world), and hast revealed them to the lowly and simple, plain and honest: for even so, Father, it seemed good in thy sight.

22. Then he said to his disciples, all things are delivered to me by my Father; and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
