14. And when the hour was come he sat down, the twelve apostles being with him.

15. Then he said to them, I have greatly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will eat thereof no more, until (the passover and all the types, rites, and ceremonies) be fulfilled in the kingdom of God, (superseding them.)

17. Then he took the cup, and giving thanks, said, Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18. For I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, (the joys it represents) until the kingdom of God come.

19. Then he took bread, and giving thanks, brake it, and gave to them saying, This is (a symbol of) my body to be given for you: this do in remembrance of me,

20. He took likewise the cup after supper, saying, This cup (ratifies) the new covenant thro' my blood (which it represents,) which is to be shed for you.

21. ¶ But, behold his hand that betrays me, is with me on the table. 22. And indeed the Son of man goeth, as it was determined; but wo to him by whom he is betrayed!

23. Then they enquired among themselves who of them would do this thing.

24. There was also a contention among them, who of them should be accounted the greatest.

25. Then he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority over them are called Benefactors (by their flatterers). 26. But ye shall not be so; but let the greatest among you be as the younger; and the chief, as he that serves. 27. For which is greater, he that is at table, or he that serves? is not he that sits at meat? but I am among you as he that serves. 28. Ye have continued with me in my temptations: 29. And as my Fa

ther hath appointed to me, I appoint to you a kingdom; 30. To eat and drink at my table, (feast on fulness of joys,) in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging (denouncing a just doom on) the twelve tribes of Israel.

31. Now the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath sought you, to sift you as wheat; 32. But I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not (utterly) and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

33. Then he said to him, Lord I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death.

34. But he replied, I tell thee, Peter, before the cock crow this day, thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 35. He said also to them, When I sent you without purse, and bag and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

36. Then he said to them, (but now the times grow worse) he that hath a purse let him take it, and likewise his bag; and he that hath no sword let him sell his mantle and buy one (to defend him from robbers). 37. For I tell you, That what is written of me, must yet be accomplished, He was reckoned among the transgressors; for the things (spoken) concerning me will soon have an end, (being fulfilled).

38. Then they said, Lord, behold here are two swords. He said to them, It is enough.

39. So he came, and went, as usual to the mount of Olives, his disciples also followed him. 40. And being at the place, he said to them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

41. Then he withdrew from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down and prayed, 42. Saying, Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me: yet not my will, but thine be done.

43. Now there appeared to him an angel from heaven strengthening him. 44. And being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat

was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45. And having risen up from prayer, he came to his disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46. And said to them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

47. ¶ And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and Judas, one of the twelve, before them, drew near to Jesus to kiss him. 48. But Jesus said to him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss!

49. Now those about him seeing what would follow, said to him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

50. ¶ And one of them smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

51. But Jesus said, Suffer ye thus far. So he touched his ear, and healed him.

52. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple, and the elders who came to him, are ye come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53. When I was daily with you in the temple ye stretched no hands against me: but this is your hour, being (the hour of Satan with) the power of darkness (to exult over me.)

54. Then they took him, and brought him into the high priest's house, and Peter followed afar off. 55. And having kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and being set down together, Peter sat down among them. 56. But a certain maid seeing him sit at the fire, stedfastly looked at him, and said, This man was also with him. 57. But he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.

58. And a little after another saw him, and said, Thou art also one of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not.

59. And about the space of an hour after, another confidently affirmed, saying, Indeed this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean. C c

Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest, and immediately, while he yet spake, the cock

61. Then the Lord turning looked on Peter. Now Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. 62. Then Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

63. Now the men that held Jesus mocked him and smote him. 64. And having blindfolded him they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? 65. And many other things blasphemously spake they a gainst him.

66. ¶ But when it was day, the elders of the people, the chief priests, and the scribes came to gether, and brought him into their council, 67. Saying, If thou be the Christ, tell us? But he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not believe. 68. And if I also ask (your objections), ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit at the right hand of (the power) of God.

70. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God, (the Messiah?) Then he said to them, Ye say truly that I am. 71. So they said, What need we any farther testimony? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.

CHAP. XXIII.

JESUS ACCUSED BEFORE PILATE.

Now the whole multitude of them led him to Pilate. 2. And accused him, saying, We found this man perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar, saying, That he himself is Christ a king.

3. Then Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the king of the Jews? and he answering, said, Thou sayest it. 4. Then said Pilate to the chief priests and the people, I find no fault in this man.

5. But

they were the more violent, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee to this place.

6. When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked, whether he were a Galilean? 7. And when he knew he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who also was then at Jerusalem.

8. And Herod was very desirous to see Jesus, for he wanted to see him long ago, having heard many things of him; he hoped also to have seen some miracle done by him.

9. So he questioned him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

10. Now the chief priests and scribes stood, vehemently accusing him. 11. And Herod with his soldiers, despising and mocking him, arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

12. That day also, Pilate and Herod became friends; being at enmity before.

13. Now Pilate calling together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14. Said to them, Ye have brought this man to me as one that perverteth the people; and I having examined him. before you, found no fault in him concerning those things whereof ye accuse him; 15. No, nor yet Herod; for I sent you to him, and nothing worthy of death is done by him: 16. I will therefore chastise him, and release him. 17. For of necessity he must release one to them at the feast. 18. But they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas; 19. Who for insurrection made in the city, and murder, was cast into prison.

20. Pilate, therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. 21. But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him! 22. Then he said to them the third time, Why? what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him; I will therefore chastise him, and release him. 23. But they
