cried aloud, requiring him to be crucified; and they with the chief priests prevailed.

24. So Pilate gave sentence as they required. 25. So he released to them him whom they desired, that for insurrection and murder was cast into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

26. And as they led him away, they seized one Simon a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and laid on him the cross, to bear it after Jesus.

27. ¶ Now a great company of people, and of women followed him, who also bewailed and lamented him. 28. But Jesus turning to them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but for yourselves, and your children. 29. For, behold, the days are coming, in which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and they that never suckled. 30. Then shall they say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31. For if these things are done in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? (if the harmless suffer so, what may the guilty expect?)

32. Now two malefactors were also led with him to be put to death. 33. And being come to the place of skulls, called Calvary, they crucified him and the malefactors there; one on the righthand, and the other on the left.

34. Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. Now they divided his garments, and cast lots for them.

35. Now the people stood beholding, and the rulers also with them, derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. 36. Then the soldiers also coming, mocked him, and offered him vinegar, 37. And saying, if thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. 58. And a superscription also was written over him in Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew letters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39. And one of the malefactors who were

crucified, reviled him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

40. But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

41. And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42. Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

43. Then Jesus said to him, Verily I tell thee, To-day thou shalt be with me (thy soul with mine) in paradise.

44. It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45. For the sun was darkened, and the vail of the temple was rent in the midst.

46. At last, Jesus cried aloud, and said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit: and, having said thus, he resigned his spirit.

47. Now the centurion seeing what was done, glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48. And all the people who came to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. 49. And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

50. Now, behold, a man named Joseph, a counsellor, a righteous and a good man, 51. Who had not consented to their counsel and deed, he was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews; and he also waited for the kingdom of God: 52. He went to Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus. 53. And took it down and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

54. That day also was the preparation, and the sabbath approached.

55. Now the women also who came with him

from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. 56. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; but rested the sabbath, according to the command.

CHAP. XXIV.

CHRIST'S RESURRECTION DECLARED.

Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices they had prepared, and some came with them. 2. Now they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3. Then they entered in, but found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

4. And while they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5. Now being afraid, and bowing their faces to the earth, they said to them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6. He is not here, but he is risen: remember how he spake to you when he was yet in Galilee, 7. Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinners, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

8. Then they remembered his words; 9. And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things to the eleven, and all the rest.

10. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11. But their words seemed to them as idle tales, for they believed them not.

12. Then Peter ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down, beheld the linen clothes lying by themselves, and departed, wondering at what was happened.

13. And lo, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was about sixty furlongs from Jerusalem. 14. And they

talked together about all things which had hap pened.

15. And while they conversed and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16. But their eyes were holden, that they knew him not. 17. And he said to them, What conversations are these that ye have with one another, as ye walk, and are sad? 18. Then one of them, named Cleophas, said to him, Art thou only a sojourner in Jerusalem, and hast not known what things have been in these days? 19. Then he replied, What things? And they said, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet mighty in word and deed before God, and all the people. 20. Whom the chief priests delivered, and our rulers condemned to death, and crucified him. 21. But we trusted that he was to have redeemed Israel; and moreover this is the third day since these things were done. 22. Moreover some women also of our company, who were early at the sepulchre, made us astonished; 23. For, when they found not his body, they came, saying, They saw a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24. And some of us went to the sepulchre, and found it even as the women had said; but him they saw not.

25. Then he said to them, O inconsiderate, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

27. Then beginning at Moses, and going thro' all the prophets, he explained to them the things concerning himself, in all the scriptures.

28. Now they drew near to the village whither they were going, but he looked as if he would go farther. 29. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us, since it is towards evening, for the day declines. So he went in to tarry with them.

30. And sitting at meat with them, he took bread,

and blessed and brake it, and gave to them. 31. Then their eyes were opened, that they knew him; then he disappeared to them. 32. Then they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

33. Then they rose that hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven together, and those that were with them, 34. Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. 35. Then they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known by them in breaking of bread.

39. Behold Handle me, bones, as ye spoken, he

36. And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace be to you. 37. But they were terrified and affrighted, thinking they beheld a spirit. 38. Then he said to them, Why are ye troubled? and why do (such) thoughts arise in your hearts? my hands and my feet, it is I myself. and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and see me have. 40. And having thus shewed them his hands and his feet. 41. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? 42. Then they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honey-comb. he took it, and ate before them. 44. And said to them, I told you while I was with you, that all things written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me, must be fulfilled.

45. Then he opened their understanding to understand the scriptures, 46. And said to them, It is written, that thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47. And that repentance with remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48. And ye are witnesses of these things.
