16. And at even his disciples went down to the sea, 17. And entered into a ship, to go over to Capernaum: it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. 18. And the sea arose high by a great wind blowing. 19. And having rowed about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near the ship; and they were afraid. 20. But he saith to them, It is I; be not afraid. 21. Then 21. Then they gladly received him into the ship, and immediately were at the land whither they went.

22. The day following, the multitude who stood on the other side of the sea, seeing there was none other boat there but that wherein his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with them into it, but that they departed alone. 23. However there came other boats from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread, after that the Lord had given thanks. 24. Now the people seeing that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25. And finding him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? 26. Jesus replied, Verily, verily, I tell you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled. 27. Labour not so much for the meat which perisheth, as for that which endureth to everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give you; for him hath God the Father sealed (or authorized).

28. Then said they to him, What shall we do to work the works of God? 29. Jesus replied to them, The work of God is to believe on him whom he hath sent.

30. Therefore they said to him, What miracle shewest thou then, for us to see and believe in thee? what dost thou work? 31. Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32. Then Jesus said to them, Verily,

verily, I tell you, Moses gave you not the bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true (spiritual) bread from heaven (of which the other was only a figure). 33. For the (spiritual) bread of God is he who cometh down from heaven, and giveth (spiritual) life to the world.

34. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. 85. Then Jesus said to them, I am the bread of (spiritual) life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst, (or never want comfort.) 36. But I have said to you, That ye have even seen me, and believe not. 37. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will not cast out. 38. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but his will that sent 39. And this is the Father's will that sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but raise it up at the last day. 40. And this is his will that sent me, that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

me.

41. The Jews then murmured at him for saying, I am the bread which came down from heaven. 42. And they said, Is not this Jesus, Joseph's son, whose father and mother we know? how then saith he, I came down from heaven? 43. Jesus, therefore, replied to them, Murmur not among yourselves. 44. No man can come to me, except the Father who sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. 45. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every one that hath heard, and learned of the Father (by his Spirit), cometh to me. 46. None hath seen the Father but he who is (the Son) of God. 47. Verily, verily, I tell you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 48. I am the bread of (the spiritual) life. 49. Your fathers ate (material) manna Ff

in the wilderness, and died. 50. This is the (spiritual) bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat, and not die (eternally). 51. I am the living bread (the soul's food) which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this (spiritual) bread he shall live (spiritually, and be happy) for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, (or the benefits that I purchased by partaking of flesh, and suffering in the human nature), which (benefits) I will give for the life of the world. 52. The Jews, therefore, contended among themselves, saying, How can he give us his flesh to eat? 53. Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I tell you, Except ye eat (or feed spiritually on the benefits purchased by) the flesh of the Son of man, and drink (or receive the consolations purchased by) his blood, ye have no (spiritual) life in you. 54. Whoever eateth (by faith) my flesh, and drinketh (by faith) my blood, hath eternal life (or bliss), and I will raise him up at the last day. 55. For (the pardon purchased in) my flesh is meat indeed (for the soul,) and (the peace purchased by) my blood, is drink (of refreshing comfort) indeed (to the soul). 56. He who (thus by faith) eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me (by faith) and I in him (by my Spirit). 57. As the living Father sent me, and I live by the Father; so he who (thus by faith spiritually) eateth (or feedeth on) me, shall also live by me. 58. This is the (spiritual) bread which came down from heaven; not as your fathers ate (material) manna, and died. He that eateth of this bread shall live (spiritually) for ever.

59. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60. Many of his disciples, having heard this, said, It is an hard saying; who can understand it? 61. Now Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, Doth this of

fend you? 62. What now will ye say, if ye see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? 63. It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing; the words that I speak to you they are (to be understood of the) Spirit, and (thus) they are life. 64. But some of you believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who believed not, and who would betray him. 65. So he said, Therefore I said to you, No man can come to me, except it were given to him of my Father.

66. Hence many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67. Then said Jesus to the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68. Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69. And we believe, and are sure, that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 70. Jesus answered them, I have chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil. 71. He spake of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, as he would betray him, being one of the twelve.

CHAP. VII.

CHRIST REPROVETH HIS KINSMEN.

AFTER these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

2. Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was near. (Lev. xxiii. 34.) 3. His brethren, therefore, said to him, go hence, into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works thou doest. 4. For none doeth any thing in secret, who himself seeketh to be known publicly: if thou doest these miracles, shew thyself to the world (in doing them.) 5. For neither did his kindred believe on him. 6. Then Jesus said to them, My time (for going to the feast) is not yet come; but your time is always ready. 7. The world cannot hate you, (as ye are conformed to it); but me it hateth, because I tes

tify that its works are evil. 8. Go ye up to this feast: I go not up yet to it, for my time is not yet fully come.

9. Having said these words to them he abode still in Galilee. 10. But his kindred being gone up, he went also up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

11. Now the Jews sought him at the feast, saying, Where is he? 12. And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him; for some said, He is a good man; others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. 13. However no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14. Now, about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 15. And the Jews wondered, saying, How hath this man learning, having never learned?

16. Jesus answered them, saying, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17. If any man will do his will, (by the peace and comfort he finds therein, Psalm cxix. 165.) he shall know concerning the doctrine whether it be of God, or whether I speak it of myself. 18. He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. 19. Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why seek ye to kill me?

20. The people said, Thou hast a devil: who seeketh to kill thee? 21. Jesus replied to them, I have done one work, and ye all wonder. 22. Moses gave you circumcision, not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers, and ye on the sabbath circumcise a man. 23. If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath, without breaking the law of Moses; are ye angry at me, because I made a man altogether whole upon the sabbath? 24. Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
