there, came, not for Jesus' sake only, but to see Lazarus also, whom he raised from the dead.

10. But the chief priests consulted to kill Lazarus also; 11. Because by reason of him many Jews went away and believed on Jesus.

12. On the next day, many who came to the feast, hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13. Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, crying, Hosanna, (save I pray, all hail), blessed is the king of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

14. Now Jesus having procured a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 15. Fear not, inhabitant of Sion; behold, tby King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt, (Zech. ix. 9).

16. These things his disciples understood not at first; but when Jesus was glorified (being ascended), then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him.

17. The people that were with him, when he called Lazarus out of his grave, raising him from the dead, bare witness. 18. For this reason the people also met him, because they heard he had done this miracle.

19. The Pharisees, therefore, said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

20. Now certain Greeks were there among them that came up to worship at the feast: 21. These came, therefore, to Philip, who was of Bethsaida in Galilee, and entreated him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. 22. Philip cometh and telleth Andrew, and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

23. Then Jesus answered them, saying, The time is come when the Son of man should be glorified, (by the Gentiles believing on him). 24. Verily, verily, I tell you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if

it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. (So will the fruits of Messiah's death be manifold). 25. He that loveth his life (more than the gospel) shall lose (the happiness of) it, but he that undervalues his life (in this world) shall keep its (joys) to life eternal. 26. If any man would serve me, let him follow me; and where I am there shall my servant also be. If any man serve me, him will my Father honour. 27. Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I to this hour (of suffering). 28. Father, glorify thy name, (even thy justice in the satisfaction for sin). Then a voice came from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it (in thy holy life, doctrine, and miracles), and will do it again (in thy sufferings for sinners, 1 Pet. iii. 18.)

29. The people, therefore, who stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered; others said, An angel spake to him.

30. Jesus said, This voice came not for my sake; but for your sakes. 31. Now is the judgment of this world (to rectify it); now shall (Satan) the prince of this world be cast out (of his dominion in idolatry). 32. And when I am lifted up from the earth (on the cross) I will draw all the ends of the earth to me. 33. This he said, signifying what death he should die. 34. The people answered him, we have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever; how sayest thou then, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

35. Then said Jesus to them, Yet a little while is (Christ) the light with you, (for he is soon to leave you): walk while ye have the light (diligently improve it); lest (the) darkness (of trouble and anguish) come upon you; for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have (Christ) the light, believe in (him who is) the light, that ye may be the children of

36.

the light (even his people). These things spake Jesus, and departed, and concealed himself from them.

37. But tho' he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him. 38. So the words of Esaias the prophet were fulfilled, saying, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been manifested? (or the power of the gospel known.) 39. Therefore they would not believe, because Esaias said again, 40. He hath given them up to (judicial) blindness of their (mental) eyes, and hardness of heart, (Psal. lxxxi. 12.) so that they could not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, so as to be converted, and be healed. 41. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him, (liii. vi. 10.)

42. Yet among the rulers many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43. For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44. ¶ Jesus cried, saying, He that believeth on me believeth not on me (only), but on him that sent me. 45. And he that seeth me (by faith), also seeth him that sent me. 46. I am come a light into the world, that whoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not (now); for I came not to judge the world (now), but to save the world. 48. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath that which judgeth him: the word that I have spoken shall judge him at the last day. 49. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father who sent me, gave me in command what I should say and speak. 50. And I know that his command (concerning faith and repentance) is (the enjoyment of) life everlasting. Whatever I speak, therefore, even as the Father appointed me, so I speak.

CHAP. XIII.

CHRIST WASHETH HIS DISCIPLES' FEET.

Now before the passover feast, tho' Jesus knew his hour was come to go out of this world to the Father, yet having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2. And supper being come, the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3. Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and went to God; 4. He rose from supper, and laid aside his long loose upper garment; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5. Then he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash his disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

6. So he cometh to Simon Peter, who saith to him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7. Jesus answered him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 8. Peter saith to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not (morally, Rev. i. 5.) thou hast no part with me. 9. Simon Peter then saith

to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10. Jesus replied to him, He that is washed needeth only his feet washed (again), and is (accounted) altogether clean; and ye are clean, but not all. 11. For he knew who would betray him; therefore he said, Ye are not all clean.

12. Now having washed their feet, and taken his garments, and sat down at table again, he said to them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13. Ye call me Master and Lord; and ye say well, for so I am. 14. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet. 15. For I have given you an example, to do as I have done to you. 16. Verily,

verily, I tell you, The servant is not greater than his lord; nor is he that is sent greater than he that hath sent him. 17. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

18. I speak not of you all, I know whom I have chosen: but, that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted his heel against me. 19. Now I tell you before it come, that, when it comes to pass, ye may believe that I am (the Messiah). 20. Verily, verily, I tell you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.

21. When Jesus had thus said he was troubled in spirit, and testified, saying, Verily, verily, I tell you, That one of you shall betray me. 22. Then the disciples looked on one another, doubting of whom he spake.

23. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, (even John). 24. Simon Peter, therefore, beckoned to him to ask of whom he spake. 25. He then leaning on Jesus' breast, saith to him, Lord, who is it? 26. Jesus answered, It is he to whom I shall give a bit, when I have dipped it. And dipping a bit he it to Judas Iscariot, Simon's son.

gave

27. And after the bit Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus to him, What thou doest, thou wilt do quickly. 28. Now none at the table knew why he said this to him. 29. For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him, Buy those things we need for the feast; or that he should give something to the poor. He then, having received the bit, went out immediately: and it was then night.

30.

31. Then Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, ( destroying the works of the devil), and God is (thereby) glorified in him. 32. If God be glorified in him, God will also glorify him with
