2. And lo, they brought to him a man having the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the sick of the palsy, Son, take courage and comfort, thy sins are forgiven thee. 3. Then, lo, some of the scribes said within themselves, he blasphemes.

4. But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Why think you evil in your own hearts. 5. It is in my power, but more difficult, to remove sin, the cause of sickness, and so make the effect to cease. `6. But to make you know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins, I say to the sick of the palsy, Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thine house. 7. Then he arose, and went to his house.

8. But the multitude seeing it, wondered and glorified God, for giving such authority to men.

9. Now Jesus going on from thence, saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the custom-house, and said to him, Follow me, then he arose and followed him.

10. Now, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, lo, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11. Which the Pharisees seeing, they said to his disciples, Why eateth your master with publicans and sinners? 12. But Jesus hearing that, said to them, the whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will rather have mercy than sacrifice: for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

14. Then came to him John's disciples, saying, We and the Pharisees fast often, but why do thy disciples not fast.

15. But Jesus said to them, Can the bridegroom's companions mourn whilst he is with them? But the time will come, when he will be taken from them, and then shall they fast. 16. No man puts a piece of new cloth on an old garment; for what

is put in to make it up, takes from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17. Nor do men put new wine into old bottles; else the bottles burst and perish, and the wine runs out: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved, (The Pharisees are still under darkness and terror; and John's disciples mourn his absence, which mine will do with fasting afterwards; but as yet they are not prepared; it would be to them as new wine to old leathern bottles).

18. ¶While he thus spake to them, lo, a certain ruler came and worshipped him, saying, my daughter is just now dead; but come and lay thy hand on her, and she shall live. 19. Then Jesus arose, and also his disciples, and followed him.

20. Now, lo, a woman being diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: 21. For she said in herself, If I only touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22. But Jesus turned about; and, seeing her, said, Daughter, take good courage, thy faith hath made thee whole. So the woman was made whole from that hour. 23. Now when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels (women using musical instruments, for mourning here), and the people making a noise, 24. He said to them, Depart; for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they derided him. 25. But the people being departed, he went in, and taking her by the hand, she arose. 26. And the fame hereof spread thro' all that country.

27. As Jesus departed, two blind men followed him, crying out thus, Thou son of David, (his type as king, so was not Abraham, &c.) have mercy

on us.

28. And having come into the house, the blind men came to him: then Jesus saith to them, Believe ye I am able to do this? They said, Yea, Lord. 29. Then he touched their eyes, saying, D

According to your faith be it to you. 30. So their eyes were opened; but Jesus straitly charged them, to let no man know it. 31. But being departed, they spread his fame thro' all that country.

32. As they went out, lo, some brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. 33. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, such a thing was never seen in Israel. 34. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils by the prince of the devils.

35. Now Jesus went about in all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and disease among the people.

36. But seeing the multitudes, he was moved with compassion, because they were wearied, and scattered abroad as sheep having no shepherd.

37. Then he said to his disciples, The (gospel) harvest indeed is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers into his harvest.

CHAP. X.

THE APOSTLES SENT TO DO MIRACLES.

HAVING called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and diseases.

2. These are the names of the twelve apostles: The first, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James, Zebedee's son, and John his brother; 3. Philip, and Nathaniel Bartholomew, Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alpheus, and Lebbeus, (or Jude his brother) surnamed Thaddeus; 4. Simon the zealot, and Judas Iscariot the traitor.

5. These twelve Jesus sent out, commanding them thus, Go not to the Gentiles, nor into any city of the Samaritans: 6. But go rather to the

lost sheep of the Israelites. 7. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is come near. 8. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely he have received, freely give, (take no money for miracles, Acts viii. 20.)

9. Provide neither gold nor silver, nor brass in your purses, 10. Nor bags for your journey, nor two coats, nor (two pair of) shoes, (Mark vi. 9.) nor yet staves; for the labourer is worthy of his provision (or hire, Luke x. 7.)

11. And into whatever city or village ye enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and abide there, till ye depart. 12. And when ye enter into any house, say, (My blessing of) peace be here. 13. And if the house be worthy, it shall obtain it; if not, ye shall obtain the reward of your labour.

14. And whosoever will not receive you nor hear your words, depart from that house or city, and shake off the dust from your feet (as polluted by them, and to be a witness against them.)

15. Verily, I tell you, it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

16. T Behold, I send you forth as sheep among wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

17. And beware of men; for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; 18. And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for an evidence to them and the Gentiles.

19. But when they deliver you up take no thought how or what ye shall say; for what ye shall speak, at the time, shall be given you. 20. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.

21. Yea, the brother will deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child; the children also

shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. 22. And ye shall be hated by all men for my name's sake; but he that endures to the end shall be saved. 23. But when they persecute you in one city, flee into another; for I tell you certainly, ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel till the Son of man come, Heb. ii. 16. (in the powerful demonstration of his Spirit, and also to destroy the Jewish state by the Romans).

24. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

25. It is enough for the disciple to be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more so shall they call those of his household?

26. Therefore, fear them not; for there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed; and hidden that shall not be known.

27. What I tell you privately in corners, speak ye openly in public. 28. And fear not them who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

29. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? one of which falls not to the ground without your heavenly Father's will; 30. Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31. Therefore fear not, ye are more excellent than many sparrows.

32. Therefore whoever shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father in heaven. 33. But whoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father in heaven.

34. Think not that I come to send earthly peace and prosperity, (but what is spiritual and eternal). I will even suffer the sword of persecution in myself and my followers. 35. By men's perverseness, (contrary to the peaceful nature and design of the gospel,) it will have the effect to set even the nearest
