maintenance while I labour)? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord (personally as an apostle); Are ye not my work in the Lord? 2. If I am not an apostle to some others, yet I doubtless am so to you,'for ye are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord (by your conversion).

3. This is my defence to them that examine me in this matter.

4. Have we not a right to eat and to drink (at their expence for whom we labour)? 5. And also to take about with us in our travels a sister or a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the kinsmen of the Lord and Peter do? 6. Or should I only and Barnabas, not have a right to forbear working for our support? 7. Who ever serves in war at his own charge? who plants a vineyard, and expects not to eat of its fruit? or, who feeds a flock, and partakes not of its milk?

8. Say I these things merely as a man (without divine authority)? doth not the law say also the same? 9. For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn for threshing it. Doth God take care for oxen only? 10. Or saith he it also for our sakes? Doubtless for our sakes was it written; for he who plows, ought to plow in hope (of partaking of the fruit of his labour), and he who threshes in hope should partake of its fruits.

11. If we have sown to you spiritual things, is it any great matter that we reap your worldly things? 12. If others partake of this right over you, should not we rather claim it? but we have not used it, for we endure all things, rather than occasion any hindrance to the. gospel of Christ.

13. Know ye not that they who are employed about the holy things (pertaining to the temple) live thereby, and they who wait on the altar (are fed thereby) in partaking of the offering with the altar? 14. So likewise the Lord Jesus Christ appointed that they who preach the gospel should live thereby, Matth. x. 10. Luke x. 7.

15. But I have partaked of none of these things; nor have I written thus that it should be so done to me; for it were better for me to die (for want), than to have this my glorying made void. 16. For though I preach the gospel, I have no cause to boast; for a necessity lieth upon me, (by my commission); and wo to me, if 1 preach not the gospel. 17. If I indeed do this willingly, I have a reward; but though I do it unwillingly, 1 must do it, for a dispensation is entrusted to me.

18. What then is my reward? Surely, when I preach the gospel of Christ faithfully without expence, and so not abuse my right in it, to self-interest, I shall be rewarded at last, (1 Pet. v.; 19. For though I be free from all men, (being under obligations to none), yet I made myself the servant of all, to gain the more. 20. To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might convert the Jews, (Acts xvi. 3. xxi. 21, &c); to those who thought they were under the ceremonial law, as if under that law, (in things indifferent), that I might convert them; 21. To those that were not under the ritual law, as being myself without it, but not without the moral law to God, and under the law of gospel obedience to Christ, that I might win them that are without the ritual law. 22. To the weak and scrupulous I became as weak, that I might gain upon the weak; I became all things (not morally evil) to all men, that by all means I might save some. 23. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might partake with you of its joys.

24. Know ye not that they who run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run that ye may obtain. 25. And every man that (in wrestling) striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now, they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. 26. I therefore run so, not as uncertainly; so I fight, not as one that beateth the air: 27. But I keep my body under, and bring it into subjection; lest by any means after I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

THE JEWISH SACRAMENTS FIGURES.

Now, brethren I would not have you ignorant, that all our fathers were under the cloud, (Exod. xiii. 21. for a shade by day,) after they had all passed thro' the sea, (coming out of Egypt); 2. And were all (as it were) baptized under the conduct of Moses, (into that dispensation) in the cloud, and in the sea, (wetting them). 3. And they all ate the .same (miraculous, or) spiritual food; 4. And they all drank the same (miraculous,) or spiritual drink; for they drank of that mystical Rock, provisions of which followed them; and that rock represented Christ. 5. Yet with most of them God was not well pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6. Now, these things were figures and examples to us, that we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7- Neither be ye idolaters, as-were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play before the idol. 8. Neither let us commit whoredom, as some of them did, and fell in one day twenty-three thousand, (by the plague, and by the sword, Numb, y.xv.) 9. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also did, and were destroyed by fiery serpents. l0. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also did, and were destroyed by the destroyer, (the arigel of death). 11. Now all these things that happened to them are examples to us, and they are written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages (the last dispensation) is come.

12. Wherefore, let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13. No trial hath befallen you yet but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above your ability; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to 7 bear it.

14. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. 15. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. 16. The sacred cup, (the emblem of past and future) blessing, which (in the Lord) we bless, is it not the (token of our) communion (in the benefits) of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not likewise the communion of the body of Christ, (bruised for our sin). 17i For we tho' many, are (as it were, different parts of one and) the same broken bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread, (being one in love to Christ, and each other). 18. Consider Israel according to the flesh, by descent. Are not they who eat of the sacrifices partakers with the altar (of God, as it were feasting in communion with him). 19. What then do 1 say? that an idol (of wood, stone, or metal) has any virtue in it, or that the thing sacrificed to idols, has in itself any vice, or moral pollution? 20. But I say, that what the Gentiles sacrifice, they offer to evil demons, and not to God, and I would not that you have communion with demons. 21. Ye cannot (acceptably) drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons; ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and the table of demons. 22. Do we mean to provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? 23. All things (morally indifferent) are lawful for me, but all things are not expe

And if any unbelievers invite you to a feast, and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake. 28. But if any say to you, This hath been sacrificed to an idol, eat it not, both out of regard to him that told thee, and also out of regard to conscience; for the earth and its fulness is the Lord's, (so he will provide for thee otherwise). 29. I «ay» for conscience sake, not thine own only, but. that of the other; for why is my liberty judged at the bar of another man's conscience? 30.1 For if 1 with thanksgiving partake (of the gifts of Providence), why am I reviled for using that for which I gave God thanks?

31. Whether, therefore, ye eat or drink, or whatever ye do, do all, to the glory of God. 32. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God; 38. As I also please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

CHAP. XI. /j .

HE REPROVETH THEM FOR DIVERSE ABUSES.

Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

2. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you, 3. But I would have you know, that the head of the woman is the man; and the head of every man is Christ; and the head of Christ is God. 4. Every man praying or prophesying, with his head qovered, dishonoureth (Christ) his head.
