3. Yea, tho' I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, or tho' I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profits me nothing. 4. Love bears injuries long, is gentle and kind; love envieth not; love is not outrageous, is not puffed up, 5. Behaves not itself unbecomingly, seeks not its own interest only, is not easily provoked, deviseth no evil; 6. Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but righteously, in the truth; 7. Excuseth all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8. Love never fails: but whether there be prophecies, they shall be finished; whether there be different languages, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge in rituals, it shall vanish away. 9. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10. But when what is perfect is come, their what is in part shall be done

away.

11. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I was affected as a child, I reasoned as a child; but when I became a man I put away childish things. 12. For now we see in a figure, as in a mirror or prospect obscurely; but then face to face; now I know in part; but then shall I know clearly, (intuitively, as angels), even as also I am known. 13. There now abide faith, hope, love, these three (notable graces); but the greatest of these is love.

CHAP. XIV.

PROPHECY COMMENDED.

FOLLOW after love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that ye may prophesy. 2. For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men, but to God: for none else understands him, tho' in the spirit he speak mysteries. 3. But he that prophesieth speaks to men to edification, and exhortation and comfort. 4. He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself only; but he that prophesies edifies the church.

5. I would that ye all spake in different languages; but rather that ye prophesied; for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the church may receive edification.

6. Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking dif ferent languages, what shall I profit you, except I speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge of any scripture, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7. And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a due distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8. For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to

the battle?

9. So likewise, except ye utter by the tongue words that can be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 10. Tho' there be many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them without signification, 11. Yet if I know not the meaning of the languages, I shall be to him that speaks, a barbarian, and he that speaks shall be a barbarian unto me. 12. So likewise, seeing ye desire spiritual gifts, seek to abound in them for the edification of the church.

13. Therefore, let him that speaks in an unknown language, pray, that he may also interpret. 14. For if I pray in an unknown language, my spirit prays, but my meaning is unprofitable to others.

15. What is my duty then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16. Otherwise, if thou givest thanks in the Spirit, how shall he that occupies the place of the unlearned, say, Amen, to thy thanksgiving, seeing he knows not what thou sayest? 17.

For tho' indeed, thou gavest thanks well, yet the other is not edified.

18. I thank my God, that I speak with more languages than you all: 19. Yet in the church I would rather speak five words with meaning, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown language.

- 20. Brethren, be not children, but men, in understanding; but in malice be ye children. 21. In the law it is written, With other languages and other lips will I speak to this people; and yet even then, they will not hearken to me, saith the Lord.

22. Therefore different languages are for a sign, not to the believers, but to the unbelievers; but prophesying is not for the unbelievers, but for the believers.

23. If, therefore, the whole church meet in one place, and all speak in unknown languages, and the unlearned or unbelievers come in, will they not say ye are distracted. 24. But if all prophesy, and there come in an unbeliever, or one unlearned, he is convinced by all, he is judged by all. 25. Thus the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and then falling down on his face, he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed among you.

26. How is it then, brethren, when ye come together, each of you hath a psalm, or a doctrine, or an unknown language, or a revelation, or an interpretation. Let all things be done to edifying. 27. If any speak in an unknown language, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that in succession; and let one interpret. 28. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29. Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others discern.

a

30. If any thing be revealed to another that

sits by, let the first keep silence. 31. For yé may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted. 32. And the spiritual gifts of the prophets are orderly, and subject to the prophets succeeding. 33. For God is not the author of disorder, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34. Let your women keep silence in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak; but are commanded to be under subjection, as also saith the law. 35. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home; for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36. What! came the word of God out from you? or came it to you only, (and to none else)? 37. If any man seem to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things I write to you, are the Lord's commands. 38. But if any man will be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39. Wherefore, brethren, desire to prophesy, yet forbid not to speak in different languages. 40. Let all things be done decently, and in order. CHAP. XV.

THE RESURRECTION PROVED.

Now, I declare to you brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which ye also received, and wherein ye stand; 2. By which also ye are saved, if ye faithfully retain the doctrine I preached to you, if ye have not believed in vain. 3. For I delivered to you, among the chief things, what I also received, that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures; 4. And was buried, and rose the third day, according to the scriptures: 5. And was seen by Peter, then by the twelve. 6. After that by above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part are yet alive, but some are

fallen asleep. 7. After that he was seen by James; then by all the apostles. 8. And last of all he was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. 9. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am; and his grace was not bestowed upon me in vain; for I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me...

11. Therefore, whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed..

12. Now, if Christ be preached as risen from the dead, how say some among you there is no resur. rection of the dead? 13. But if there be not, then Christ is not risen, 14. And if it be so, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, we also are found false witnesses concerning God; because we testified of him that he raised

15.

up Christ; whom he raised not, if the dead rise not. 16. For if they rise not, then Christ is not risen. 17. And if he be not risen, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18. Then they (Christians and martyrs) also who are fallen asleep on account of Christ are perished. 19. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most wretched.

20. But now Christ is risen from the dead, and become the chief of them that slept. 21. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23. But every man in his own order: Christ the chief; afterward they who are Christ's at his coming. 24. Then shall the end (of the world) be, when he shall deliver up the (mediatorial) kingdom to God, even the Father, (the plan of it being fi nished); when he shall have abolished all opposite principality, authority, and power, (as Satan, sin,
