49. So shall it be at the end of world: the angels shall come and separate the wicked from among the righteous, 50. And cast them into the furnace of fire, where shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51. Jesus saith to them, Understand ye all these things? They replied, Yea, Lord.

52. Then he said to them, Every scribe instructed for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder, who brings out of his treasure things new and old.

53. ¶ Now Jesus having finished these parables, departed thence.

54. And coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath he this wisdom, and these mighty works! 55. Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary; and his brethren James, and Joses, and Simon, and Jude? 56. And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath he all these things? so they were offended at him.

57. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and in his own house.

58. And he did not many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

CHAP. XIV.

HEROD'S OPINION OF CHRIST, &c.

Ar that time, Herod the tetrarch, (fourth-rate governor), hearing of the fame of Jesus, 2. He said to his servants, it is John the Baptist risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works are wrought by him.

3. For Herod had seized John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. 4. For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5. And desiring to kill him, he feared the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet.

6. But when Herod's birth-day was kept, Herodias' daughter danced before them, and pleased Herod. 7. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. 8. And she being instructed before by her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head on a plate.

9. Now the king was sorry: nevertheless, by reason of the oath, and them who sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

10. So he sent and beheaded John in the prison, 11. Whose head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel, who brought it to her mother.

12. Then his disciples came and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13. Who hearing it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place privately, which the people hearing, they followed him by land out of the cities.

14. Then Jesus going forth, saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and healed their sick.

15. And when the evening came, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the day is now gone; send the multitudes away, that they may go to the villages, and buy themselves

victuals.

16. But Jesus said to them, They need not depart, give ye them to eat. 17. They replied to him, We have here but five loaves and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me.

Then he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and, looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 20. And they all ate, and were filled; and they took up of the remainders, twelve baskets full, (much more than at first). 21. And they who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22. Then Jesus immediately constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23. And having so done, he ascended a mountain privately to pray; and it being evening, he was there alone.

24. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea tossed with waves; for the wind was contrary. 25. And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.

26. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out with fear. 27. But straightway Jesus spake to them, saying, Take courage: it is I; be not afraid.

28. Then Peter replied to him, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29. Then he said, Come. So Peter coming down from the ship, walked on the water, going to Jesus. 30. But when he saw the wind boisterous he was afraid; and, beginning to sink, he cried, Lord, save me. 31. And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand, took hold of him and said to him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32. And when they came into the ship, the wind ceased.

33. Then they who were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, truly thou art the Son of God, (i. e. the Mediator and Saviour of the world.)

34. And passing over, they came into the country of Genesaret.

35. The men of that place also, knowing of him, sent into all the country around, and brought to him all the diseased, 36. And desired only to touch the border of his garment: and as many as touched were perfectly cured.

CHAP. XV.

CHRIST REPROVES THE PHARISEES.

THEN came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem, saying, 2. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of their ancestors? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

3. But he replied to them, Why transgress ye also the command of God by your tradition? 4. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and let him that reviles father or mother, be put to death. 5. But ye say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, (when in want), The thing thou askest is devoted, and to be offered on the altar, 6. And honours or maintains not his father or mother, he shall be free. Thus ye have disannulled the command of God by your tradition.

7. Ye hypocrites! well hath Isaiah prophesied of you, saying, 8. This people draws nigh to me with their mouth, and honours me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9. But in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines which are the commands of men.

10. Then he called the multitude, and said to them, Hear, and understand: 11. What goes into the mouth defiles not a man; but what comes out of it.

12. Then came his disciples, and said to him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended at hearing the speech?

13. But he replied, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not shall be rooted up. 14. Let them alone, (they are incorrigible;) they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the pit.

15. Then Peter, said to him, Explain to us this parable. 16. But Jesus replied, Are ye also yet inconsiderate? 17. Do ye not yet understand, that

whatever enters into the mouth goeth into the bel ly, and is cast out into the draught: 18. But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they pollute the man? 19. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies; 20. These are the things which pollute a man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not

a man.

21. Then Jesus departed thence, and went into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. 22. And lo, a Canaanitish woman, came out of those borders, crying to him, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously afflicted with a devil. 23. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples intreated him, saying, Send her away, from crying after us. 24. Then he said, I am sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.

25. But she came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 26. Then he replied, It is not fit to cast the children's bread to dogs. 27. Then she said, Yes, true, Lord; but the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master's table.

28. Then Jesus said to her, O woman, great is. thy faith; be it to thee even as thou desirest. her daughter was cured from that very hour.

29. Now Jesus departed thence, and coming near the sea of Galilee, he went up on a mountain and sat down there.

30. Then great multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, whom they cast down at Jesus' feet, and he healed them; 31. So that the multitude wondered, seeing the dumb speak, the maimed made whole, the lame walk, and the blind seeing: Then they glorified the God of Israel.

32. Then Jesus called his disciples to him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three
