5. Which in other ages was not made known to men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6. That the Gentiles should be joint heirs of gospel benefits with the Jews, and of the same church, and joint partakers of his promise in Christ, by the gospel; 7. Whereof I am made a minister, according to the gift of God's grace given to me, by the effectual working of his power. 8. To me, by far the least of all saints, is this grace given, to preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; 9. And to make all men see the communication of the mystery, hid from eternal ages in the secret purpose of God, who created all things, by Jesus Christ; 10. To make known the manifold wisdom of God to the angelic principalities and powers in heavenly places, by means of the church, 11. According to the eternal purpose which he made in Christ Jesus our Lord: 12. Thro' whom we have freedom of speech at the throne of grace, and access with confidence of acceptance by faith in him.

13. Therefore I desire that ye faint not at my affliction for you, which is your glory. 14. For this cause I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15. From whom the whole family (of angels and saints) in heaven and earth is named (as Head), 16. That he would grant you according to the riches of his grace, to be mightily strengthened by his Spirit in the inner-man, (the soul). 17. That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, that being rooted and grounded in love, 18. Ye may be able to perceive with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height (of the love of Christ), 19. And labour to know the love of Christ, which exceeds knowledge, that ye might . be filled with all the fulness of the grace of God.

20. Now to him that is able to do abundantly, exceeding all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21. To him be glory

in the church by Christ Jesus, throughout all ages, for ever and ever. Amen.

CHAP. IV.

EXHORTATIONS TO UNITY.

I THEREFORE, a prisoner for the Lord Jesus, beseech you to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called (to the hope of glory), 2. With all humility and meekness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love; 3. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the one Spirit, in the bond of peace. 4. There is one body (the church), and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one and the same hope of your calling; 5. One Lord, (Jesus Christ), one faith, one baptism, 6. One God and Father of all believers, who is above all in power, and thro' all by his vital influences, and in you all by his grace and Spirit. 7. But grace is given to every one, according to the measure of the free gift of Christ. 8. Therefore, he says, having ascended on high, he led the captivators captive, and gave gifts to men. 9. Now, this expression, He ascended, signifies that he also descended first into the region of the dead. 10. He who descended is the same who ascended far above all visible heavens, that he might fill all things with his influence. 11. And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers; 12. For the perfecting of the saints, fitting some for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the (church, the) body of Christ. 13. Till we all come to the same faith, and knowledge of the Son of God, to the maturity of a perfect man, to the full measure of the spiritual stature of the fulness of the grace of Christ: 14. That we may be no longer as children tossed to and fro as waves of the sea, and borne about as a vapour in the air with every wind of doctrine, by the cheating art of men, and by their subtility in every method of deceit; 15. But speaking

the truth in love, may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; 16. By whom the whole body being harmoniously joined, and connected fitly, by every assisting joint, according to the effectual working necessary to every part, makes an increase to the whole church, to the edifying of itself in love. 17. Therefore I testify and charge, in the Lord's name, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles, in the vanity of their mind: 18. Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life God commands, (in holiness) through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19. Who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20. But ye have not so learned (the gospel of) Christ; 21. Seeing ye have heard of him, and have been taught in him, (even in his gospel,) as the truth is in Jesus: 22. To put off, with respect to the former conversation, the corrupt disposition, which is depraved by deceitful lusts; 23. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24. And put on the new nature, which according to God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

25. Therefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth to his neighbour; for we are members of one another, (to succour each other). 26. Be angry, and sin not; let not the sun's light go down on your wrath; 27. Neither give advantage to the devil. 28. Let him that stole steal no more; but labour with his hands what is good, that he may have to give to him that needs. 29. Let no corrupt discourse proceed out of your mouth, but what is good to useful edifying, to minister grace to the hearers. 30. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are (sanctified and sealed) to the day of redemption. 31. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and indignation, and clamour, and evilspeaking, be put away from you, with all malice;

32. And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

CHAP. V.

EXHORTATIONS TO LOVE.

BE therefore imitators of God, as dear children; 2. And walk in love, as Christ also loved us, and gave himself for us, a peace-offering and a sacrifice to God (for sin,) for a sweet-smelling savour (as incense.) 3. But let not fornication, or any uncleanness, or covetousness, be even named among you, as becometh saints; 4. Nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor scurrilous jesting, which are not fit nor proper; but rather giving of thanks. 5. For ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, nor an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6. Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God on the disobedient. 7. Be not, therefore, partakers with them. 8. For ye were formerly in the darkness of ignorance, but now ye are in the light of the Lord. Walk as children of light; 9. For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth; 10. Discovering what is well-pleasing to the Lord. 11. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of the darkness of wickedness, but rather reprove them. 12. For it is shameful even to speak of the things done by them in secret.

13. But all things that are discovered are made manifest by the light, for it is light (or true knowledge), that makes every thing manifest. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, (unconcerned), and arise from the dead (sleep), and Christ shall enlighten thee.

15. See then that ye live circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise men, 16. Redeeming the time, because the days are evil, (Job xiv. 1. Psal. xxvii. 5.)

17. Therefore be not inconsiderate, but understanding what the Lord's will is. 18. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is dissoluteness; but be filled with the Spirit's (influences); 19. Speaking to one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20. Giving thanks always for all things to God even the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21. Submitting yourselves each to another in the fear of God.

22. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23. For the husband is' the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church; and he is the Saviour of the body. 24. Therefore, as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every. thing.

25. Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26. To sanctify it (by his Spirit), and cleanse it, as it were with the washing of water, by the word.

27. To place it in his presence a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but being holy, and without blemish.

28. So ought men to love their wives even as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church. 30. For we are esteemed by him as members of his body, of his flesh and of his bones. 31. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and they two shall be as one flesh.

32. This mystery is great; but I speak concern. ing Christ and the church.
