33. However, let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife take care to reverence her husband.

CHAP. VI.

CHILDREN'S DUTY TO PARENTS.

CHILDREN obey your parents in what the Lord commands, for this is right. 2. Honour thy father and thy mother, which is the first commandment with (a particular) promise. 3. That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

4. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the discipline and admonition of the Lord.

5. Servants, obey your worldly masters in worldly things, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart as to Christ: 6. Not with eye-service, as men pleasers; but as Christ's servants, doing God's will from the heart; 7. With good will doing service as to the Lord, and not to men: 8. Knowing a man shall receive of the Lord whatever good he doeth, whether he be bond or free.

9. And, ye masters, do the same to them, forbearing threatening; knowing ye have also a master in heaven, with whom there is no respect of persons.

10. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, even in his mighty power. 11. Put on the complete armour of God, to be able to withstand the devil's wiles. 12. For our wrestling is not with flesh and blood alone, but with (diabolical) principalities and powers, who rule in the darkness (i. e. ignorance, error, and wickedness) of this world, with wicked spirits, with respect to heavenly things.

13. Therefore, take the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to resist in the evil day, and by doing all, to stand. 14. Stand, therefore, hav

ing your loins girded with the girdle of truth (and sincerity), having on righteousness as a breastplate; 15. And having your feet shod (and fitted for thorny paths) with (the passive virtues of selfdenial and patience), the preparation for the practice of the gospel of peace (in bearing the cross, or suffering for the gospel). 16. Besides all these, having faith as a shield for protection, whereby ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts (or furious suggestions) of the wicked one, as driving you to infidelity or despair. 17. And have the hope of salvation as a helmet for your head, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18. Praying at all times, with all kinds of prayer, supplicating in the fervency of your spirits (the aid of the divine Spirit, Rom. viii. 26.) and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints; 19. And particularly for utterance to me, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20. For which I am an ambassador in bonds, to speak freely, as I ought to speak.

21. But that ye may also know the things that concern me, and what I am doing, Tychicus, a beloved brother, and faithful minister in the Lord's work, shall make known to you all things. 22. Whom I sent to you, to make you know our affairs, and to comfort your hearts. 23. Peace be with the brethren, and faith with love from God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.

Written from Rome, by Tychicus.

ST. PAUL'S EPISTLE TO THE

PHILIPPIANS.

CHAP. I.

PAUL'S THANKFULNESS TO GOD.

PAUL and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ,

to all the saints in the church of Christ Jesus at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2. Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3. I thank my God in every mentioning of you.

4. Always, in every prayer of mine, making supplication for you all, with joy, 5. For your par taking of the gospel from the first day (ye heard it) until now; 6. Being confident, that he who hath begun a good work in you, will accomplish it unto the day of Jesus Christ's (appearing). 7. As it is meet for me to be thus affected toward you all, having you on my heart, as you are all partakers of grace with me in my bonds for the confirmation and defence of the gospel. 8. For God is my witness how greatly I long after you all with the tender affection of Christ Jesus.

9. And I pray, that your love may yet abound more and more in knowledge and in all experience, 10. To discern things that are excellent; and be sincere, and without offence, till the day of Christ's appearing; 11. Being filled with the fruits of charity, to the glory and praise of God, by Jesus Christ.

12. But I would have you know, brethren, that the things concerning me have fallen out rather to the advancement of the gospel; 13. As my bonds are known to be for the cause of Christ, in all the Roman palace, and in all other places; 14. And

many of the brethren in the Lord, growing confident by my bonds, have much more courage to preach the word without fear. 15. Some indeed preach Christ from envy and contention, while others do it from sincere affection. 16. These indeed who do it out of strife, not with pure motives, desire to add more affliction to my bonds; 17. But others from love, knowing I am set for the defence of the gospel.

18. What then? even every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is preached, I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. 19. For I know this shall issue in my salvation thro' your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20. Ac cording to my earnest expectation and hope, I shall be ashamed in nothing; but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, (either in bonds or free) whether it be by life or death. 21. For the end of my living is to glorify God, and dying is gain to me.

22. And if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I know not. 23. For I am in a strait betwixt the two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ, which is better (beyond all expression). 24. But to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

25. And being confident of this, I know I shall abide and continue with you all, for the furtherance of your faith and joy. 26. That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ thro' me, by my coming to you again. 27. Only let your course of life be as becomes the gospel of Christ; that, whether I come and see you, or be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, striving together with one mind, for the faith of the gospel; 28. And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: their enmity being to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, even from God. 29. For to you it is granted as a 3 M

favour on the part of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for his sake; 30. Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

CHAP. II.

EXHORTATIONS TO UNITY.

If there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any communication of the Spirit, if any bowels of mercies, 2. Fulfil ye my joy, in being like minded, having the same love, agreeing together in attending to the one thing (needful). 3. Doing nothing thro' strife or vain-glory; but with humility let each esteem another better than themselves. 4. Let not any aim at his own interests only, but each of you also at the interests of others.

5. Let the same mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. 6. Who being in the form of God, he was not eager in retaining that likeness to God (which he had before). 7. But made himself of no account, taking upon him the form of a servant, when made in the likeness of men; s. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient to death, even the death of the cross. 9. Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him a name above every name, 10. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of beings in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth (infernals), 11. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (of all), to the glory of God the Father.

12. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling: 15. For it is God who works in you, both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

14. Do all things without murmurings and dis
