ST. PAUL'S EPISTLE TO

TITUS.

CHAP. I.

WHY TITUS WAS LEFT IN CRETE.

PAUL, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus

Christ, according to the faith of God's chosen, and the acknowledging of the truth according to godliness; 2. In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; 3. And hath in due time manifested his word thro' that preaching which is committed to me by the appointment of God our Saviour; 4. To Titus mine own son, according to the common faith; Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

5. I left thee in Crete, on purpose to set in order the things defective, and appoint presbyters in every city as I directed thee. 6. If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having believing children, not accused of dissoluteness, luxury, nor dis. obedient. 7. For a bishop must be blameless, as

the steward of God, not self-willed, nor soon angry, nor given to wine, no striker, not greedy of base gain. 8. But a lover of hospitality, and of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9. Holding fast the true word as he was taught, being able by sound doctrine both to instruct and to convince the gainsayers.

.

10. For there are many disobedient and vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision; 11. Whose mouths must be stopped; who subvert whole houses, teaching things they ought not, for the sake of base gain. 12. One of themselves, a poet of their own, (Epimenides) said, The Cretians are always liars, savage beasts, slowbellied, gluttons.

13. This testimony is true, therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14. Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commands of men, that pervert the truth.

15. To the pure all things are pure, but to the polluted and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16. They profess to know God, but in works deny him; being abominable, disobedient, and to every good work reprobate.

CHAP. II.

DIRECTIONS GIVEN TO TITUS.

But speak thou things becoming sound doctrine; 2. That the aged men may be sober, grave, tem-. perate, sound in faith, in love, in patience.

3. That the aged women likewise be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching good things; 4. Instructing the young women to be sober, to love their husbands; and love their children; 5. To be discrect, chaste, keeping at home, good, obedient to their husbands, that the word of God be not evil spoken of.

6. Exhort young men likewise to be sober. 7. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works; in doctrine shewing integrity, gravity, sincerity, 8. Sound speech that cannot be condemned, that the contrary party may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

9. Exhort servants to obey their masters, and please them well in all things; not contradicting; 10. Not defrauding, but shewing all good fidelity, to adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

11. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12. Teaching us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13. Looking for the blessed hope of the glorious ap pearing of the great God, even our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14. Who gave himself (to die) for us, to redeem us from all iniquity, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

15. These things speak, and exhort, and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

CHAP. III..

DIRECTIONS FOR Conduct.

PUT them in mind to submit to principalities and authorities, to obey magistrates, to be ready for every good work, 2. To calumniate no man, not to be contentious, no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness to all men.

3. For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, spiteful, and hating one another. 4. But when that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5. Not by works of righteousness done by us, but by his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, even the renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6. Which he shed

on us abundantly by Jesus Christ, our Saviour; 7. We being justified by his grace, and made heirs as to the hope of eternal life.

8. This is a true saying, and these things affirm thou constantly, that they who have believed in God be careful to maintain good works: these are the things which are good and profitable to men. 9. But avoid foolish questions, genealogies, contentions, and strifes about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

10. An heretic, after the first and second admonition, reject; 11. Knowing that such are perverted, and sin, being self-condemned.

12. When I send Artemas to thee, or Tychicus, endeavour diligently to come to me at Nicopolis; for I determined there to winter. 13. Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey carefully, that nothing be wanting to them. 14. And let our's also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.

15. All that are with me salute thee. them that love us in the common faith. with you all. Amen.

PHILEMON.

OF PHILEMON'S LOVE.

to the church in thy house: 3. Grace be to you, and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. I thank my God, being mindful of thee always in my prayers, 5. Hearing of thy faith toward the Lord Jesus, and thy love to all the saints; 6. That thy partaking the faith may become effectual in the knowledge of every good thing among us, as concerning Jesus Christ. 7. For we have great joy and consolation by thy love, as the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

8. Tho' I have much liberty in the authority of Christ, to enjoin thee what is fit,

9. Yet, for love's sake, I rather beseech thee, being now Paul the aged, and also a prisoner for Jesus Christ.

10. I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds, 11. Who in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me; 12. Whom I have sent again: therefore receive him as it were mine own bowels; 13. Whom I would have retained with me, to minister in thy stead to me in the bonds (I suffer for) the gospel. 14. But without thy consent I would do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. 15. For perhaps be therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldst receive him for ever; 16. No longer as a servant, but above it, as a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to thee, both in the flesh and in the Lord, (naturally and spiritu ally.)

17. Therefore if thou consider me as a companion, receive him as myself; 18. If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee any thing, put that to mine account; 19. I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it; altho' I say not to thee that thou owest to me even thine own self.

20. Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the
