joyous, but grievous; but, afterward it yields the peaceable fruits of righteousness to them who are rightly exercised thereby.

12. Therefore, lift up the hands which hang down, and (strengthen) the feeble knees (take courage;) 13. And make straight paths for your feet, that the lame be not turned out of the way; but rather be healed, (set a good example to the fearful.)

14. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15. Looking diligently, lest any man fall short of the grace of God; lest any evil root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be infected; 16. Lest there be any whoremonger, or any profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17. For ye know that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing he was rejected; and found no place of repentance, (nor change of mind in Isaac,) though he sought it earnestly with tears. (Gen. xxvii. 33.)

18. For ye are not come near to the mount that could be touched, and to the burning fire, nor to the black cloud, and darkness, and tempest, 19. And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of the words; which they that heard entreated that the word should not be spoken to them any further. 20. For they were not able to endure what was commanded, Even if a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: 21. Yea, so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake; 22. But ye shall come to mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, 23. To the general assembly and church of the first-born, enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24. And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to

the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

25. See that ye refuse not him who speaks; for if they escaped not who refused him that spake (the oracles of God) on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we reject him who is from heaven; 26. Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

27. Now this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing the things shaken, as things that are made (but for a time); that the things not to be shaken may remain.

28. Therefore as we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us hold fast the favour of serving God acceptably with reverence and godly fear; 29. For our God is a consuming fire.

DIVERS ADMONITIONS.

LET brotherly love continue.

2. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

3. Remember those that are in bonds, as bound with them, and those who suffer cruelly, as being yourselves also in the body.

4. Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

5. Let your course of life be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Josh. i. 5.) 6. So we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, I will not fear what man can do to

me.

7. Remember them who have ruled over you, and spoken to you the word of God; whose faith follow, considering the good end of their conver

sation. 8. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever.

9. Be not carried about with diverse and strange doctrines; for it is good that the heart be established with grace, not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

10. We have a spiritual altar, whereof they have no right to eat who serve the tabernacles. 11. For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought for a sin-offering into the sanctuary by the high priest, are burnt without the camp.

12. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

13. Let us go forth, therefore, to him without the camp, bearing his reproach, Philip. iii. 8. Gal. vi. 14. 1 Pet. i. 18. 2 Cor. v. 17. 14. For here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

15. By him, therefore, let us offer the sacrifice, of praise to God continually, even the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name.

16. But to do good, and to distribute, forget not; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

17. Obey them that rule over you, and submit yourselves; for they watch for your souls, as those that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief; for that is unprofitable for

you.

18. Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to behave ourselves honourably.

19. But I beseech you the more to do this, that I may be shortly restored to you.

20. Now the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood he shed to ratify the everlasting covenant, 21. Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you what is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus 3 U

Christ: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

22. Now I beseech you, brethren suffer the word of exhortation; for I have written a letter to you in few words.

23. Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see

you.

24. Salute all that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you.

25. Grace be with you all. Amen.

THE GENERAL EPISTLE OF

S. JAMES the Apostle.

CHAP. I.

OF REJOICING UNDER THE CROSS.

JAMES, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus

Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered abroad, greeting,

2. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers trials; 3. Knowing, that the trying of your faith works patience. 4. But let patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

5. If any of you want wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6. But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting; for he that wavereth, is like a wave of the sea moved and tossed with the wind; 7. For let not that man think he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

8. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

9. Let the brother of low degree (temporally) rejoice that he is exalted (spiritually). 10. But the rich in his humiliation, because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. 11. For the sun's splendour having risen with scorching heat, it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beauty of its appearance perisheth: so the rich man also shall fade in his ways.

12. Blessed is he that endures temptation; for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to them that love him.

13. Let none say, when tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts he any man: 14. But every one is tempted when allured by his own lusts he is ensnared. 15. So when lust hath conceived, it brings forth sin; and when sin is finished, it brings forth death.

17.

16. Be not deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift, and every perfect gift, is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, nor shadow of turning. 18. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his rational creatures, John iii. 3.

19. Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20. For the wrath of mat works not the righteousness of God. 21. Therefore lay aside all filthiness and excess of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls; 22. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23. For if any be a hearer, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass; 24. Who beholds himself, and goeth away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25. But whoever looks into the (gospel, that)
