8. I indeed baptized you with water; but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

9. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in Jordan.

10. And coming up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit, like a (fiery) dove, descending upon him. 11. And a voice from heaven came, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.

12. And immediately, the Spirit led him into the wilderness. 13. Where he was forty days tempted by Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him.

14. Now, after John was imprisoned, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the glad tidings of the kingdom of God, 15. And saying, The time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God (the gospel dispensation) approaches: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

16. And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

17. Then Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men (by converting them.) 18. And straightway they left their nets and followed him.

19. And having gone a little farther he saw James and John Zebedee's sons, who were also in the ship preparing their nets. 20. And straightway he called them. And they left their father in the ship with the hired servants, and followed him.

21. Then they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath-day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. 22. And they were amazed at his doctrine; for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes.

23. There was then in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; who cried out, 24. Saying, Let us alone; what hast thou to do with us,

Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thou art the holy one of God.

25. Then Jesus rebuked him, saying, be silent, and come out of him. 26. Then the unclean spirit convulsed him, and cried with a loud voice, and came out of him. 27. Then they were all astonished so much that they reasoned among themselves, saying, what new doctrine is this? for with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.

28. And immediately his fame spread thro' all the region around Galilee.

29. And having come out of the synagogue, immediately they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

30. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and immediately they tell him of her. 31. Then he came and taking her by the hand, lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered to them.

32. And at even, when the sun's light departed, they brought to him all the diseased, and the possessed with devils.

33. Then all the city assembled at the door. 34. And he healed many sick of various diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered them not to speak, for they knew him.

35. And in the morning, rising up long before day, he went out to a solitary place, and there prayed.

36. Then Simon, and these with him, followed after him. 37. And having found him, they said to him, All men seek thee. 38. Then he said to them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also; as therefore I am come.

39. Then he preached in all their synagogues throughout Galilee, and cast out devils.

40. Then a leper came to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, said, If thou wilt, thou

canst make me clean. 41. Then Jesus moved with compassion, stretching forth his hand, touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean.

42. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

43. Then dismissing him, he strictly charged him, 44. Saying, tell no man; but go thy way and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them (of thanksgiving.)

45. But as he went out he began to publish and blaze it much abroad, so that Jesus could no more openly enter the city then (for the crowd), but was without in desert places: and they came to him from all parts.

CHAP. II.

CHRIST CURES THE PALSY.

He entered into Capernaum again after some days; and it was known that he was in the house. 2. Then immediately many came together, so that there was no room to receive them, not even about the door: and he preached the word to them. 3. And some came to him bringing one sick of the palsy, carried by four. 4. But, when they could not come near to him for the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was: (it being flat) and hav ing broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

5. Then Jesus seeing their faith, said to the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.

6. But some of the scribes were sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, saying, 7. Why doth he thus speak blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only? 8. And immediately Jesus perceived by his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, and he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? 9. It is in hearts? 9. It is in my power, but more

difficult, to remove sin, the cause of disease, and so make the effect to cease. 10. But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins, he saith to the sick of the palsy, 11. I say to thee, Arise, take up thy couch, and go to thine house.

12. And immediately he arose, took up his couch, and went out before them all; so that they all were amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw such a thing.

13. Then he went out again by the sea-side; and all the multitude came to him, and he taught them.

14. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the custom-house, and said to him, Follow me. So he arose and followed him.

15. Now as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also with Jesus and his disciples: for many followed him.

16. But the scribes and Pharisees seeing him eat with publicans and sinners, they said to his disciples, Why eateth and drinketh he with publicans and sinners?

17. Then Jesus hearing it, said to them, The whole need not a physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.

18. Now the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast; so they came and said to him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

19. But Jesus said to them, Can the companions of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? as long as they have him with them they cannot fast. 20. But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast. 21. No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment; else the new piece that filled it.

worse.

up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made 22. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; for it bursts the bottles, and is spilled, and they perish; but new wine must be put into new bottles. (See the meaning in Matth. ix. 14.)

23. As he went thro' the corn-fields on the Sabbath, his disciples being hungry, began to pluck the ears of corn and eat.

24. But the Pharisees said to him, Why do they what is not lawful on the Sabbath? 25. Then he replied to them, Have ye never read what David did when he was hungry, he, and those with him, 26. How he went into God's house, in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for any to eat but the priests, and gave also to those with him.

27. He said also to them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28. Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.

CHAP. III.

CHRIST CURES A WITHERED HAND.

He entered again into the synagogue, where was a man with a withered hand. 2. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath-day; that they might accuse him.

3. Then he said to the man with the withered hand, Stand forth. 4. He said also to them, he that neglects the good in his power to do, on the Sabbath, (or any other day), is guilty of the evil that thence ensues. He that saves not life, when in his power to do it, is as guilty as if he took it away. But they were silent.

5. And looking around on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith to the man, Stretch out thine hand. So he stretching it out, it was restored whole as the other.
