Cbrifs teftimony of John. S. MATTHEW. Chorumin upbraided. 2 Now, when John had heard children fitting in the markets, and in the prison the works of Chrift, calling unto their fellows,

he fent two of his difciples,

3 And faid unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

4 Jefus anfwered, and said unto them,Go,andfhew John again thofe things which ye do hear and fee: 5 The blind receive their fight, and the lame walk; the lepers are cleanfed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gofpel preached to them. 6 And bleffed is he, whofoever fhall not be offended in me.

7 ¶ And, as they departed, Jefus began to fay unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to fee? A reed fhaken with the wind?

8 But what went ye out for to fee? A man clothed in foft raiment? Behold, they that wear foft ching are in kings houses.

9 But what went ye out for to fee? A prophet? yea, I fay unto you, and more than a prophet.

10 For this is be of whom it is written, Behold, I fend my meffenger before thy face, which fhall prepare thy way before thee.

II Verily I fay unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not rifen a greater than John the Baptift: notwithstanding, he that is leaft in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12 And from the days of John the Baptift until now, the kingdom of heaven fuffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

13 For all the prophets and the law prophefied until John.

14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias which was for to come.

15 He that hath ears to bear, let him hear.

16 But whereunto fhall I liken this generation? It is like unto

17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they fay, He hath a devil.

19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they fay, Behold a man gluttonous, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and finners: but wisdom is juftified of her children.

201 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not.

21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethfaida! for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in fackcloth and afhes.

22 But I lay unto you, It fhall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment than for you.

23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, thalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24 But I fay unto you, That it fhall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for thee.

25 At that time Jefus anfwered, and faid, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, becaufe thou haft hid thefe things from the wife and prudent, and haft revealed them unto babes.

26 Even fo, Father; for fo it feemed good in thy fight.

30 For my yoke is eafy, and my burden is light.

CHAP. XII.
The Pharifees reproved.

AT that time Jefus went on the fabbath-day through the corn: and his difciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

2 But when the Pharifees faw it, they faid unto him, Behold, thy difciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the fabbath-day.

3 But he faid unto them, Have not read what David did when he was an hungered, and they that were with him;

4 How he entered into the houfe of God, and did eat the fhew-bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the pricfts?

5 Or, Have ye not read in the law, how that on the fabbath-days the priests in the temple profane the fabbath, and are blamelefs?

6 But I fay unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not facrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltlefs.

8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath-day.

9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their fynagogue.

10 And, behold, there was a man which had bis hand withered:

II And he faid unto them, What

12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the fabbathdays.

r3 Then faith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he ftretched it forth; and it was re

ftored whole, like as the other.

141 Then the Pharifees went out, and held a council against him, how they might deftroy him.

15 But when Jefus knew it he withdrew himfelf from thence: and great multitudes f followed him and he healed them all;

16 And charged them,that they fhould not make him known:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was fpoken by Efaias the prophet, faying,

18 Behold my fervant, whom I have chofen ; my beloved, in whom my foul is well pleafed: I will put my Spirit upon him, and he fhall fhew judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He fhall not strive, nor cry; neither fhall any man hear his voice in the ftreets.

20 A bruifed reed fhall he not break, and fmoaking flax fhall he not q quench, till he fend forth judgment unto victory.

21 And in his name fhall the Gentiles truft.

22 Then was brought unto him one poffeffed with a devil, blind and dumb; and he healed him, infomuch that the blind and dumb both fpake and faw.

23 And all the people were amazed, and faid, Is not this the fon of David?

fea-fide.

2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, fo that he went into a fhip, and fat; and the whole multitude ftood on the fhore.

3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, faying, Behold, a fower went forth to fow:

4 And when he fowed, fome feeds fell by the way-fide, and the fowls came and devoured them up.

12 For whofoever hath, to him fhall be given, and he fhall have more abundance; but whofoever hath not, from him fhall be taken away even that he hath.

13 Therefore fpeak I to them in parables: because they seeing, fee not; and hearing they hear not; neither do they understand.

14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Efaias, which faith, By hearing ye thall hear, and fhall not underftand; and feeing ye fhall fee, and fhall not perceive:

15 For this people's heart is waxed grofs, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have clofed; left at any time they fhould fee with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and thould underftand with their heart, and fhould be converted, and I fhould heal them.

16 But bleffed are your eyes, for they fee; and your ears, for they hear.

5. Some fell upon ftony places, 17 For verily Ifay unto you, That where they had not much earth; many prophets and righteous men and forthwith they fprung up, be- have defired to fee thofe things caufe they had no deepness of earth. which ye fee, and have not feen 6 And when the fun was up they them; and to hear thofe things were fcorched; and, becaufe they which ye hear, and have not heard had no root, they withered away. them.

7 And fome fell among thorns; and the thorns fprung up and choked them.

8 But other fellintogood ground, and brought forth fruit, fome an hundred-fold,fome fixty-fold, fome thirty-fold.

18 Hear ye, therefore, the parable of the fower.

19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and underftandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was fown in his heart.

muffard-feed, and This is he which received feed by them; but gather the wheat intó the way-fide.

20 But he that received the feed into ftony places, the fame is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it:

21 Yet hath he not root in himfelf, but dureth for a while; for when tribulation or perfecution arifeth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

22 He also that received feed among the thorns, is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

23 But he that received feed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which alfo beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, fome an hundredfold, fome fixty, fome thirty.

24 Another parable put he forth unto them, faying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which fowed good feed in his field;

25 But, while men flept, his enemy came and fowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

26 But when the blade was fprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares alfo.

27 So the fervants of the householder came, and faid unto him, Sir, didft not thou fow good feed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28 He faid unto them, An enemy hath done this. The fervants faid unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29 But he faid, Nay; left, while ye gather up the tares, ve root up alfo the wheat with them.

311Another parable put he forth unto them, faying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of muftardfeed, which a man took, and fowed in his field:

32 Which indeed is the leaft of all feeds; but when it is grown it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree; fo that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

33 Another parable spake he unto them, The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

34 All these things fpake Jefus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:

35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept fecret from the foundation of the world.

36 Then Jefus fent the multitude away, and went into the house; and his difciples came upto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

37 He answered, and faid unto them, He that foweth the good feed is the Son of man;

38 The field is the world; the good feed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

39 The enemy that fowed them is the devil; the harveft is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

40 As, therefore, the tares are 30 Let both grow together until gathered and burned in the fire; fo the harveft: and in the time of fhall it be in the end of this world. harveft I will fay to the reapers, 41 The Son of man fhall fend Gather ye together firft the tares, forth his angels, and they fhall gaand bind them in bundles to burn ther out of his kingdom all things
