It hath been faid, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 But I fay unto you, That whofoever shall put away his wife, faving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever hall marry her that is divorced committeth ad adultery. 33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been faid by them of old time, Thou shalt not forfwear thyfelf, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I fay unto you, Swear not at all: neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerufalem; for it sthe city of the great King: 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head; because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatfoever is more than thefe cometh of evil. 381 Ye have heard that it hath been faid, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I fay unto you, That ye refift not evil; but whosoever shall fmite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other alfo. 40 And if any man will fue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak alfo. 41 And whofoever thall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 43 Ye have heard that it hath been faid, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy: 44 But I fay unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, dogoodtothem that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and perfecate you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his fun to rife on the evil and on the good, and fendeth ram on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the fame? 47 And if ye falute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans fo? 48 Be ye, therefore, perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. T CHAP. VI. Chrift's fermon continued. AKE heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore, when thou doeft thine alms, do not found a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the fynagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I fay unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thon doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth; 4. That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father, which feeth in fecret, himself shall reward thee openly. 5 And when thou prayeft, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of Of prayer and forgiving. CHAP. VI. Of worldly care, &c. of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you. They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet; and, when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father, which feeth in secret, thall reward thee openly. 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth: and ruft doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 Butlay up for yourselves trea. sures in heaven, where neither moth nor ruft doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain 21 For where your treasure is there will your heart be also. repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body fall be full 8 Benot ye, therefore, like unto them: for your Father knoweth of light. what things ye have need of before ye ask him. 9 After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven; Hallowed be thy name. To Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will alfo forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a fad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to faft. Verily Hay unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and washthy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in fecret: and thy Father, which feeth in fecret, shall reward thee openly. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in thee be dariness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can ferve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or elfe he will hold to the one, and despife the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye fhall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they fow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeththem. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you, by taking thought, can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Confider the lilies of the field how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spis; 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon, in all his glory, was not awayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God fo clothe the grafs of the field, which to-day Rash judgment reproved. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. CHAP. VII. Christ's fermon ended. TUdge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but confidereft not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thoa say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine owneye? 5 Thou hypocrite, firft caft out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. 61 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, left they trample them under their feet, and turnagain and rend yon. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom, if his fon ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a ferpent? 1 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more thall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even fo to them: for this is the law and the prophets. 131 Enter ye in at the strait for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to deftruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in theeps clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so everygood tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit; neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and caft into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Aiz, and shall be given you; feek, and ye shall find; knock, and it that be opened unto you: ther which is in heaven. 8 For every one that afketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, 21 Not every one that faith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Fa22 Manywillfay tomeinthatday, Lord, Lord, have we not prophefied |
