CHAP. II.

CHAP. II. Simeon's prophecy of Christ

17 And, when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the thepherds. 19 But Mary keptalithefe things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praifing God for all the things that they had heard and feen, as it was told unto

them.

29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 For mine eyes have seen thy falvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Ifrael.

33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

34 And Simeon blessed them, and faid unto Maryhis mother, Behold, this child is fet for the fall and rifing again of many in Ifrael; and

21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcifing for a fign which shall be spoken of the child, his name was called againft; JESUS, which was so named of 35 (Yea, a fword shall pierce the angel before he was conceived through thy own foul also ;) that in the womb. the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

22 And when the days of her purification, according to the law of Mofes, were accomplished, they brought him to Jerufalem, to prefent him to the Lord;

24 And to offer a facrifice, according to that which is faid in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25. And, behold, there was a man in Jerufalem, whose name was Simeon; and the fame man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Ifrael: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had feen the Lord's Christ.

27 And he came by the spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

35 And there was one Amna a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Afer; she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity:

37 And she was a widow of akont fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38 And the, coming in that instant, gave thanks likewise unte the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerufalem.

39 And when they had performed all things, according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilce, to their own city Nazareth.

40. And the child grew, and waxed ftrong in fpirit, filled with wifdom; and the grace of God was upon him.

41 Now his parents went to Jerufalena every year at the feast of the passover.

46 And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, fitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and afking them questions.

47 And all that heard him were aftonished at his understanding and anfwers.

48 And when they faw him they were amazed: and his mother faid unto him, Son, why haft thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have fought thee forrowing. 49 And he faid unto them, How is it that ye fought me? wift ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

5o And they understood not the faying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was fubject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 32 And Jefus increased in wifdomand ftature, and in favour with God and man.

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Efaias the prophet, faying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths traight.

5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked fhall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

6 And all flesh shall fee the fal. vation of God.

7 Then faid he to the multitude

that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers! who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bring forth, therefore, fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I fay unto you, That God is able of these ftones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree, therefore, which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and caft into the fire.

Chrift fafteth, and is tempted. ND Jefus, being full of the Holy Ghoft, returned from Jordan, and was led by the fpirit nto the wildernefs,

2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did cat nothing: and when they were ended he afterward hungered.

3 And the devil faid unto him, if thou be the Son of God, com mand this fstone that it be made bread.

4 And Jefus anfwered him, faying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6 And the devil faid unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

7 If thou therefore, wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

8 And Jesus answered, and faid unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou ferve.

9 And he brought him to Jerufalem, and fet him on a pinnacle of the temple, and faid unto him, If thou be the Son of God, caft thyfelf down from hence:

10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to kee thee;

II And in their hands they shall bear thee up, left at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12 And Jefus anfwering, faid unto him, It is faid, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a feafon.

14 And Jefus returned in the power of the fpirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region roundabout. 15 And he taught in their fynagogues, being glorified of all.

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the fabbath. day, and stood up for to read.

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Efaias: and, when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gofpel to the poor; he hath fent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of fight to the blind, to fet at liberty them that are bruised;

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minifter, and
