deemer, for "by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God." That holiness forms a necessary and essential part of the salvation of a sinner, for "without holiness no man shall see the Lord." That those who have really received Christ into their hearts, and are resting their hopes solely on him, shall never perish, for they are "kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation;" and at the last 66 an abundant entrance shall be administered to them into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."

These Addresses, at first designed only for distribution in his own Parish, gradually found their way to every part of the country; and many others, besides his flock, were accustomed to anticipate, with feelings of interest, the Pastoral Letter of the Minister of Iver. It was his privilege to know, that this his labour was not in vain in the Lord, but that it was made instru

mental, if not to the conversion, yet to the edification and comfort of many, while the language of his heart ever was, "Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to thy name be the praise."

Should it be thought by any who read these pages, that in setting forth the public and private virtues of this departed saint, too perfect a character has been described; and that sufficient respect has not been paid to those feelings which would have shrunk from being brought thus prominently forward-let it be remembered, that a Father is the subject of our pen, and that as he now sees things in the light of heaven, all personal considerations must be absorbed in the sole desire, that if possible, others, by "seeing his good works, might be induced to glorify their Father which is in heaven."
