WILLIAM R.

MOST Reverend and Right Reverend Fathers in God, we greet you well. Whereas we are given to underftand, that there have of late been fome differences among the Clergy of this our realm about their ways of expreffing themfelves in their fermons and writings, concerning the doctrine of the bleffed Trinity, which may be of dangerous confequence, if not timely prevented; we therefore, out of our princely care and zeal for the prefervation of the peace and unity of the Church, together with the purity of the Chriftian faith, have thought fit to fend you thefe following directions, which we ftraitly charge and command you to publish, and to fee that they be obferved within your feveral diocefes.

1. That no Preacher whatsoever, in his fermon or lecture, do prefume to deliver any other doctrine concerning the bleffed Trinity, than what is contained in the holy Scriptures, and is agreeable to the three Creeds and the thirty-nine Articles of Religion.

2. That in the explication of this doctrine they carefully avoid all new terms, and confine themselves to fuch ways of expreffion as have been commonly used in the Church.

3. That care be taken in this matter, especially to obferve the fifty-third Canon of this Church, which forbids public oppofition between Preachers, and that above all things they abftain from bitter invectives and fcurrilous language against all perfons whatsoever.

4. That the foregoing directions be alfo obferved by those who write any thing concerning the faid doctrine.

And whereas we also understand, that divers perfons, who are not of the Clergy, have of late prefumed, not only to talk and to difpute against the Christian faith, concerning the doctrine of the blessed Trinity, but also to write and publish books and pamphlets against the same,

and

and industriously spread them through the kingdom, contrary to our known laws established in this realm; we do therefore strictly charge and command you, together with all other means fuitable to your holy profeffion, to make use of your authority according to law, for the repreffing and reftraining of all fuch exorbitant practices. And for your affiftance we will give charge to our Judges, and all other our civil officers, to do their duty herein, in executing the laws against all fuch perfons as fhall by these means give occafion of fcandal, difcord, and disturbance in our church and kingdom.

MOST Reverend and Right Reverend Fathers in God, we greet you well. Whereas we are given to underftand, that there have of late been great differences among fome of the Clergy of this our realm, about their ways of expreffing themfelves in their fermons and writings, concerning the doctrine of the bleffed Trinity and whereas alfo unufual liberties have been taken by feveral of the faid Clergy, in intermeddling with the affairs of State and Government, and the Conftitution of the realm; both which may be of very dangerous confequence, if not timely prevented: we therefore, out of our princely care and zeal for the prefervation of the peace and unity of the Church, together with the purity of the Chriftian faith, and alfo for preferving the peace and quiet of the State, have thought fit to fend you these following direc tions, which we ftraitly charge and command you to pub lifh, and to fee that they be obferved within your several diocefes.

2. That in the explication of this doctrine they carefully avoid all new terms, and confine themfelves to fuch ways of expreffion as have been commonly used in the Church.

3. That care be taken in this matter, especially to obferve the fifty-third Canon of this Church, which forbids public oppofition between Preachers; because, as that Canon expreffes it, there groweth thereby much offence® and difquietnefs unto the people: and that above all things they abftain fron bitter invectives and fcurrilous language against all perfons whatsoever.
