CHAPTER-XVI.

Give me not riches lest I deny thee, O God!

The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, saith. He will not require it All his thoughts are, there is no God. Ps. 10-4.-The wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, the convetous renounceth, yea, contemneth the Lord. Ps. 10.3.-They profess that they God, but by their works deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Tit. 1-16.-Also there are certain men crept in privily, even they who were of old set forth unto this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying our only Master and Lord Jesus Christ. Jude 4.

Take heed, brethren, lest happy there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God. Heb. 3-12— Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness with iniquity? or what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Cor. 6-14 -For they have all turned aside, they are together become unprofitable. Rom. 3-12.-For without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto him, for he that cometh to God must believethat he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that seek after him. Heb. 11-6.-But if thou forsake him he will cast thee off for ever. I Chro. 28-9.

Now the devil cometh, and taketh away the word from their heart that they may not believe and be saved. Luke 8.12.—And those on the rock are they which, when they have heard, received. the word with joy, but these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. Luke 8-13.-For as they go on. their way they are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life and bring no fruit to perfection. Luke 8-14.

Now I desire to put you in remembrance, how that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. Jude 5.-And with whom was he displeased. forty years? Was it not with them that sinned, whose carcases fell in the

wilderness? Heb. 3-17.-—And to whom sware he that they should not enter tnto his rest, but to whom that were disobedient? Heb. 3-18.-And we see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief. Heb. 3-19.

CHAPTER-XVII.

Our Deeds Still follow with us from Afar,

And what we have been makes us what we are, Gr.

Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death. Jer, 21-8.—Enter not in the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Pro. 4-14 --Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. Pro. 4-15.-For they sleep not, except they have done mischief, and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall, Pro. 4-16.-They eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. Pro. 4.17.-For the way of the wicked is as darkness they know not at what they stumble. Pro. 4-19. He deviseth iniquity upon his bed, he setteth himself in a way that is not good, he abhorreth not evil. Ps. 36-4.-The way of peace they know not, and there is no judgment in their goings, they have made them crooked paths, whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace. Isa. 59-8.-They have sown wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind, it hath no stalk, the bud shall yield no meal, if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it.

Hos. 8-7.

Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy, break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. Hos. 10-12.-Either make the tree good, and his fruit good, or else make the tree corrupt and his fruit currupt for the tree is known by his fruit. Math. 12-33.-Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest. John 4-35.-And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal, that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. John 4-36. He that soweth the good seed is the Son of Man. Math 13-37.-If a man strive for

2 Tim. 2-5.-The husbandman first partaker of the fruits. 2 Tim. 2-6.

And the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Pro. 4-18.

They that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. Job 4-8.-He that observeth the wind shall not sow, and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. Ece. 11-4.-As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child, even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. Ecc. 11-5.--For he that planteth, and he that watereth, every man shall receive his own reward according to his own. labour. I Cor. 3-8.

CHAPTER XVIII.

Charity is the Scope of all God's Commands. Ch.

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20-35.-My little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue, but in deed and truth. I John 3-18.-And whoso hath the world's goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, then how doth the love of God abide in him? I John 3-17-Or if a brother or sister be naked, and in lack of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled, and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body, what doth it profit? Jas. 2-15, 16.—Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him, and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Isa. 58-7.-Then thy light shall break forth as the morning, and thy righteousness shall go before thee. Isa. 58-8.And if thou bestow on the hungry, that which thy soul desireth, and satisfy the afflicted soul. Isa. 58-19.-Then the Lord shall guide thee continually, and thou shalt be like the watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not, Isa. 58-11.

Let love of the brethren continue. Forget not to shew love unto strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Heb. 13-1,2-He that soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly, but he that soweth bountifully shall heap also bountifully, 2 Cor. 9-6.-Let each man do according as he hath purposed in his heart, not grudgingly, or of necessity, for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Cor 9-7.-Give and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, shall they give into

your bosom. For what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6-38.— Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Math. 5-42.

When thou makest a feast, bid the poor, the maimed, the lame, blind, and thou shalt be blessed. ye do not your righteousness before have to reward with your Father When therefore thou doest alms, sound not Math. 6-2. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth. Math 6-3.-That thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret, shall recompense thee. Math. 6-4. He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none, and he that hath food, let him do likewise. Luke 3-11.

Luke 14-13. 14.--Take heed that men, to be seen of them, else ye which is in heaven. Math 6-1.a trumpet before thee.

Observations on Charity.

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord, and his good deed will he pay him again. Pro. 19-17.-Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in thine hand to do it. Ps. 3-27.-Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and tomorrow I will give, when thou hast it by thee. Pro. 3-28.There is that coveteth greedily all day long, but the righteous giveth and withholdeth not. Pro. 21-26.-Many will intreat the favour of the liberal man, and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts. Pro. 19-6. The liberal soul shall be made fat, and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Pro, 11-25.-He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him, but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it. Pro. 11-26.-He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he giveth of his bread to the poor. Pro. 22-9.-He that giveth to the poor

shall not lack, but he that hideth his eye shall have many a curse. Pro. 28-27.-Also a man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men. Pro. 18-16.

Job protesteth in his duty for Charity.

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold; thou art my confidence, Job 31-24.-If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much, Job 31-25.—And if I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, Job 31-16.—Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof, Job 31-17.-Or if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering, Job 31-19.Or if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw the help in the gate, Job 31-21.-Or if my land cry out against me, Or if I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to loose their life, Job 31-38, 39.- Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. Job 31-22.

CHAPTER XIX.

My Son, in deeds of Virtue go on, That is the way to the Stars.

Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding. Job 28-28.—Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? Math. 19-16-If thou enter into life, keep the commandments. Math. 19-17.-My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not, Walk not thou in the way with them, refrain thy foot from their path. Pro. 1-10, 15_Depart from evil, and do good, and dwell for ever more, Ps. 37-27.-Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land. Ps. 37-34.-Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. Pro. 3.5.-In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. Pro. 3-6.-Be not wise in thine own eyes, fear the Lord, and depart from evil. Pro. 3-7-Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life, Pro. 4-23.-Put away from thee, a forward month, and
