FAITH WITHOUT WORKS, IS BIRD WITHOUT WINGS.

and tremble. Jas. 2-19.-But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Jas. 2-20.-Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? Jas. 2-22.-Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called the friend of God, for righteousness. Jas. 2-23-Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. but righteousness. Jas. 2-24.-For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works of righteousness is dead also, Jas. 2-26.

By faith the elders obtained a good report. Heb. 11-2.-By faith Abel offered unto God a sacrifice, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous. Heb. 11-4.-By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death, and was not found, because God translated him, for before his translation he hath this testimony, that he pleased God. by his righteousness. Heb. 11-5.-But without faith it is impossible to please God. For he that cometh to him must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him and his righteousness. Heb. 11-6.-By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, prepared an ark to the saving of his house, by the which he condemned the world. and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. Heb. 11-7.-By faith Abraham, when was called to go out into a place, obeyed, and he went out. Heb. 11-8.— By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharoah's daughter. Heb. 11-24-Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasure of sin for a season. Heb. 11-25,-And what shall I say? for the time would fail me to tell, of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jeephthae, of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets, who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,-Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Heb. 11-32 to 34.

By faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Rom. 5-1.-By whom also we have access by faith, into this grace

wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Rom. 5-2.And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patienee. Rom. 5-3.-And patience, experience, and experience hope,-And hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Rom. 5.4, 5.—Then receive the end of your faith the salvation of your souls. I Pet. 1-9.-Of which salvation the prophets have enquired, and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you. I Pet. 1-10.-And humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.Casting all your care upon him for he careth for you. I Pet. 5-6, 7.

CHAPTER LIII.

Deuch.

Reason Would Reign, Then Follows Love in Chase, Enters the Heart, and Reason Quits Its Place. Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it. Job 28-1.-But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? Job 28-12.-Man knoweth not the price thereof, "neither is it found in the land of the living." Job 28-13.Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? Job 28-20,

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Pro, 3-13.-For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. Pro. 3-14 -Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand (after death) riches and honour. Pro. 3-16.-Her ways are always pleasantness (no sickness), and all her paths are peace (in the family). Pro. 3-17.She is a tree of life (eternal) to them that lay hold on her (from the first birth), and happy is every one that retaineth her (up to the final end). Pro. 3-18-For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. Pro. 3-26.-Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding. Job 28-28.

Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding. Pro. 2-3. If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest

for her as hid treasure. Pro. 2-4.-Then thou shalt understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. Pro. 2-5.-For the Lord giveth wisdom to the wise, and out of his mouth, cometh knowledge and understanding. Pro. 2-6.-He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous, and he is buckler to them that walk uprightly. Pro. 2-7.-Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, of God, and equity, yea, every good path for Supreme Bliss. Pro. 2-9.

When wisdom entereth unto thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul,-Discretion shall preserve thee, and understanding shall keep thee. Pro. 2-10, 11.-To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger, which flattereth with her words. Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God (cf. Chapter 58). Pro. 2, 16-17.

"Unto you, O men I call, and my voice is to the sons of man, fearing God. Pro. 8-4.-0 ye simple, understand wisdom, and ye fools (after beauties), be ye of an understanding heart. Pro. 8-5.— I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of the witty inventions. Pro. 8-12.-Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the forward mouth, do 1 hate. Pro. 8-13.-Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom, I am understanding, I am strength. Pro. 8-14.-By me kings reign (for their purity in past lives), and princes decree justice. Pro. 8-15.-By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. Pro. 8-16.-I love them that love me, and those that seek me early shall find me. Pro. 8-17.-Riches and honour are with me, yea, durable riches and righteousness. Pro. 8-18.-My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver. Pro. 8-19-I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment. Pro. 8-20.-That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance, and I will fill their treasures (as the goddess of fortune). Pro. 8-21.

Now hearken unto me, O ye children, for blessed are they only that keep my ways. Pro. 8-32.-Therefore hear instruction, and be wise in time, and refuse it not. Pro. 8-33.-Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. Pro. 8-34,-For whoso findeth me timely, findeth long life, and shall

obtain favour of the Lord in the end. Pro. 8-35.-But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul to destruction, and all they that hate me love death (unnatural). Pro. 8-36.

Hear ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. Pro. 4-1.-Get wisdom, get understanding, forget it not neither decline from the words of my mouth. Pro. 4-5.-Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee (to many births), love her, and she shall keep thee (longer in the world). Pro. 4-6.-She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace, (as a king), a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee (as the most righteous king). Pro. 4-9.-Then take fast hold of instruction, let her not go, keep her, for she is thy life. Pro. 4-13.

My son, attend to my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding. Pro, 5-1.—The lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb and her mouth is smoother than oil, Pro. 5-3.-Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house. Pro. 5-8,—That thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh, and thy body are consumed, (and thou live as a ghost for full one thousand years), and say, How I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof,-And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me? Pro. 5-11 to 13.

CHAPTER LIV.

It is not the Coat that Makes the Clergyman

He Who Preaches the Gospel Must Abide by the Gospel. Arise, O Lord, into thy rest, thou, and the ark of thy strength. Ps. 132-8.-Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness, and let thy saints shout for joy. Ps. 132-9-And he that is high priest among his brethren shall not uncover his head, (when offering prayers) nor rend his clothes, or put on dirty clothes). Lev. 21-10.-Neither shall he go dead any body, nor defile him for his father, or his shall he mother. Lev. 21-11.-Neither

the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his Gol, for I am the Lord.

Lev. 21-12.-He shall take a wife in her virginity, of his own people. Lev. 21-13.-Neither shall he profane his seed among his people, for I the Lord do sanctify him. Lev. 21-15.-And the priest shall not eat of any thing, that is dead of itself, or torn, whether it be fowl or beast. Ezek. 41-31-Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel, should live of the gospel. I Cor. 9-14.-"And in your patience possess ye your souls." Luke. 21-29.-Because it is written, be ye holy, for I am holy. I Pet. 1-16.

And now 0 ye priests, this commandment is for you. Mal. 2-1.-If ye will not hear, and if he will it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith theLord, I will curse your blessings. Mal. 2-2.-And the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law of his mouth, he is the messenger of the Lord. Mal. 2-7.-That he might take a godly seed, and take heed to his spirit, and let none deal treacherous-ly against the wife of his youth, Mal. 2-15.

If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. I Tim, 3-1.-A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach,-Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, but patient, not a brawler, not covetous,One that ruleth well his own house, having children in subjection with all gravity,—Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride, he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 1 Tim. 3-2 to 7.

For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God, not selfwilled, not soon angry,-But a lover of men, sober, just, holy, temperate,-Holding fast the faithful word, as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine, both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. Tit. 1-7 to 9.-Moreover he must have a good report, of them which are without, lest he fall into reproach, and the snare of the devil. 1 Tim. 3-7.

Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre,-Holding the mystery of faith in a pure conscience. 1 Tim. 3-8,9.-And let these also first be proved, then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless
