GENESIS XXXIV-CAPTURE OF DINAH

16 So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.1

17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent before the city.

19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.

20 And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel.

Chapter 34

1 Dinah is ravished by Shechem. 4 He sueth to marry her. 13 The sons of Jacob offer the condition of circumcision to the Shechemites. 20 Hamor and Shechem persuade them to accept it. The sons of Jacob upon that advantage slay them, 27 and spoil their city. 30 Jacob reproveth Simeon and Levi.

ND Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. 3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

6 ¶ And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.

8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife. 9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.

11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give. 12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

'Seir is the mountainous land east and south of the Dead Sea. Succoth is in the Jordan valley, east of the river, and hence on Jacob's road toward Seir, but by going to Shechem he turned aside from Seir and went instead into western Palestine, where Abraham had dwelt and Isaac was still living.

“And, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off."-Gen., 8, 11.

N

OAH and his

people remained one entire year

in the ark. Even after the waters subsided there seemed at first to be nothing but desolation beyond the walls of their refuge. All the fair verdure of the earth had been destroyed; there was no grass upon the fields, no leaves upon the forests, nothing but death and horror everywhere. The first time Noah sent out the dove she came back in misery to the ark. Then, just as the year was complete, he dispatched the bird again, and this time she brought back an olive leaf.

How the weary watchers must have rejoiced! Here was a promise that their lives had not been preserved to be dragged out upon a desert waste. Earth was to resume its ancient garment of beauty. The plate depicting this return of hope into man's heart is one of the most perfect products ever achieved by the printer's art. The delicate perfection of every line of the drawing will attract immediate attention. Each one of the eagerly watching faces of Noah, his sons, and their wives, is a masterpiece in its expression of faith in God, and earthly eagerness, and reawakening joy.
