PREFACE.

THIS Selection of moral and religious Poetry (intended as a companion to the CHAPLET) is offered with diffidence to the Public; if it should assist in impressing the principles of virtue and truth on the rising generation, the end for which it has been compiled will be fully answered. Should any one think that these two principles are here set forth in too abstract a manner, and ask

"But what is Truth? 'Twas Pilate's question put "To Truth itself, that deign'd him no reply. "And wherefore? will not God impart his light "To them that ask it?-Freely-'tis his joy, "His glory, and his nature to impart. "But to the proud, uncandid, insincere, "Or negligent enquirer, not a spark."
