ITH the present issue the Nautical Magazine commences the fifty-first year of its existence.

It is seldom that a periodical journal is so fortunate as to survive for half-a-century, but the Nautical Magazine being supported by one of the chief pillars of our national greatness, has lived on and progressed with the progress of British Shipping.

The chief purpose of the Magazine has been and still is, to supply trustworthy and useful information and criticism on matters bearing upon Navigation and Commerce, not merely as ephemeral publication of the maritime news of the day with hasty comments, but rather a dispassionate chronicle and careful review, intended to serve the purposes of record and reference. That the Magazine has supplied a want is sufficiently indicated by the support which for fifty years has been accorded to it, and the conductors venture to hope that the increased number of subscribers of late years may be regarded as a proof that their work has been done in a satisfactory and serviceable manner.
