Amen. A Prayer for the Royal Family. *A Lmighty God, the fountain of all goodness, we humbly to our Gracious Queen Charlotte, their Royal Highnesses George Prince of Wales, the Princess Dowager of Wales, and all the Royal Family: Endue them with thy Holy Spirit; enrich them with thy heavenly grace; profper them with all happiness; and bring them to thine everlasting kingdom, through Jesus Chrift our Lord. Amen. A Prayer for the Clergy and People. Lmighty and everlasting God, who alone workest marvels; Send down upon our Bishops and Curates, and all Congregations Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator Jesus Christ. Amen. Paraphrafe on the Prayer for the Royal Family. O God of infinite power, from whom all good Things do come, we implore thy blessing upon our Queen Charlotte, their Royal Highnesses George Paraphrafe on the Prayer for the Clergy and People. O most mighty and eternal God, who art wonder ful in thy doings towards the Children of Men; send down upon all ranks of the Clergy and their People, the light of thy Holy Spirit, to lead them in the way of Prince of Wales, the Princess Dowager of Wales, and all the Royal Family: Help and defend them by thy Holy Spirit; adorn them with every Chriftian Virtue; and grant them to enjoy the mest exalted felicity, both here and for ever, through Jesus Christ. * To pray for the King and the Royal Family is not only our duty, as we are taught by St. Paul, 1 Tim. ii. 2. but likewise it is thewing a proper regard to our interest: because if it it is i for the welfare of a Nation that its Governors should be Righteous; it must certainly be wisdom to implore God's assistance to enable them to Salvation; and that they may serve thee acceptably, let thy blessing defcend like the dew, upon their labours, that they may bring forth Fruit to perfection. Grant this for the sake of his glorious Merits, who is our Mediator and Interceffor. become so. ‡ No less is it reasonable that men should pray for their spiritual Guides, and for a blessing upon their labours: because the Paul plant and Apollos water, yet it is God that must give the increase. + A Prayer of St. Chryfoftom. Lmighty God, who haft given us grace at this time with one accord, to make our common fupplications unto thee, and dost promife, that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name, thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the defires and petitions of thy Servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. * TH 2 Cor. xiii. 14. HE Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of evermore. Amen. § The Creed of Saint Athanafius. Upon Christmas-day, the Epiphany, Saint Matthias, Easter-day, Afcenfion-day, Whitsunday, Saint John Baptist, Saint James, Saint Bartholomew, Saint Matthew, Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Saint Andrew, and upon Trinity-Sunday, shall be fung or faid at Morning Prayer, instead of the Apostles Creed, this Confeffion of our Christian Faith, commonly called, The Creed of Saint Athanafius, by the Minister and People, standing. W Quicunque vult. Hofoever will be saved: before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholick Faith. Paraphrafe on the Whosoever hopes to enjoy the benefits of Redemption, it is absolutely necessary that he believe the Gofpel. The principal articles of Faith contained, in which are these following, viz. That there is none other † This Prayer of St. Chryfoftom, has been used in the service of the Greek Church above one thousand three hundred years: and the several petitions which have been offered up in separate Collects are fumm'd up in this. This Benedictory Prayer of St. Paul contains the ium and substance of Christianity, shewing that the Bleffings of the Gospel, are derived from the Love of God; obtained thro' the Grace of our Lord Jefus Athanafian Creed. God but one, 1. Cor. viii. 4. That there is one Father of Chrift, and conveyed to us by the Fellowship of the § This Creed was first published in the eighth Century. The condemnatory Expressions contained in it, relate only to those who when they clearly fee the Truth, fof the Doctrines contained in this Creed, perversely shut their Eyes against Conviction, and chufe darkness rather than light. Which Faith, except every one do keep whole and undefiled: without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the Catholick Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons : nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son : and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one: the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son: and such is the Holy Ghoft. The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate: and the Holy Ghost uncreate. The Father incomprehenfible, the Son incomprehenfible: and the Holy Ghost incomprehenfible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal: and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals: but one eternal. As also there are not three incomprehenfibles, nor three uncreated: but one uncreated, and one incomprehensible. So likewife the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty: and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties: but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God: and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods: but one God. So likewife the Father is Lord, the Son Lord: and the Holy Ghost Lord; Paraphrafe on the God, Acts v. 3. 4.- and that there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one, 1. John v. 7.- That Jesus Chrift is the only begotten of the Father, John i. 14. Athanafian Creed. who being in the form of God, thought it no robbery to be equal with God, Phil. ii. 6. yet was made in the likeness of Men. Phil. ii. 7. being made of a Woman, Gal. iv. 4. -who suffered for us; and his ownself bare our Sins And yet not three Lords: but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity: to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord; So are we forbidden by the Catholick religion : to say, There be three Gods, or three Lords. The Father is made of none; neither created, nor begotten. begotten. The Holy Ghost is of the Father, and of the Son : neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons: one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. And in this Trinity, none is afore, or after other: none is greater, or less than another; But the whole three persons are co-eternal together: and co-equal. So that in all things, as is aforesaid: the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped. He therefore that will be faved: must thus think of the Trinity. Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation: that he also believe rightly the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right faith is, that we believe and confess: that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the world : and Man of the substance of his Mother, born in the world. Perfect God, and perfect Man: of a reasonable soul, and human flesh subsisting; Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead: and inferior to the Father, as touching his manhood. G Paraphrafe on the Athanafian Creed. in bis own Body on the Tree, 1. Pet. ii. 21. 24. But his Soul was not left-in Hell, neither aid his Body fee Cor. ruption, Acts ii. 31. for he rose again the third Day, 1 Cor. xv. 4. afcended up far above all Heavens, Ephef. 1 Who, although he be God and Man: yet he is not two, but one Chrift. One; not by converfion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking of the Manhood into God. One altogether; net by confufion of Substance: but by unity of person. For as the reasonab'e foul and flesh is one man : So God and man is one Chrift: Who fuffered for our salvation: defcended into Hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He afcended into Heaven, he sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God Almighty : from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies: and shall give account for their own works. And they that have done good, shall go into life everlasting: and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the Catholick Faith: which except a man believe faithfully he cannot be faved. Glory be to the Father, &c. Here followeth + the LITANY, or General Supplication, to be fung or faid after Morning Prayer upon Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and at other times, when it shall be commanded by the Ordinary. Tim. iv. 1. for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the Graves shall hear bis voice, and shall come forth, John v. 28. 29. and + The Litany fignifies, as it is expressed in the Rubrick, a General Supplication: and, according to the Apostles Rule, 1. Tim. ii. 1. confifts ist of a Deprecation, that is, of petition against Evil, from O God the Father, &c. to in all Times of our Tribulation, &c. 2dly, Prayer, that is petition for good. 3dly Interceffion, that every one of us shall give an account of himself to God, Rom. xiv. 12. And the wicked shall go away into everlasting punishment : but the righteous into Life eternal, Mat. xxv. 46. All Glory and Praife, &c. is petition for others, from We Sinners do beseech, &c. to the end. It is therefore an excellent Form of Prayer in itself: and, as the People are allowed such a share in the delivery of it with their Voice, feems well calculated for devotion. |
