787. At any given sum per day, to find the amount per year. Every penny per day is one pound ten shillings and five pence per year. For 240 + 120 + 5 = 365. Every shilling per day is 181. 5s. per year.

Ex.-At 74d. per day, how much per year of 365 days?

£7 10 0 + 3 15 0 + 2s. 11d. + 24d. = £11 8s. lid.

or £1 10s. 5d. × 74d =

£11 8s. lid.

If the working days only be reckoned, then the year consists of 313 days, which, taken as pence, gives £1 6s. 1d., and taken as shillings gives £15 13s. per year.

Ex. At 1s. 2d. per day, how much year of 313 days? £1 6s. 1d. X 14≈ 141. + 41. 4s. + 1s. 2d. = £18 5s. 2d. or 313 taken as shillings gives 313 taken as pence and doubled gives 2 12 2

788. To find the value of a pound at any price per oz., take the farthings in the price of the oz. as so many shillings, and divide by 3. The reason for doing so is, that 48 farthings=

1 shilling, and 16 oz. 1 pound; therefore

= 3.

Ex. At 44d. per oz., how much per lb.?

44d. 17 farthings; =5s. 8d.

789. To find the value of an ounce from the value of a pound being given, reverse the above process.

Ex. At 5s. 8d. per lb., how much per oz. ?

5s. 8d. 5 × 3 = 17 farthings = 44d. per oz.

790. To find the value af 1 Cwt. from the price of 1 lb. being given, reckon each shilling in the price of the pound 51. 12s., each penny 9s. 4d., and each farthing 2s. 4d., or for every farthing in the price of the pound, take twice as many shillings, and four times as many pence.

Ex. 1 cwt. at 4 per lb.

(9s. 4d. X 4)+4s. 8d. 42s.

791. To find the value of a ton, from the value of 1 cwt. being

given, take every shilling in the price of a cwt., as 11. every penny as ls. 8d., and every farthing 5d.

Ex. at 21. 2s. 4 per cwt. how much per ton.

4216s. 8d. + 10d. 41. 7s. 6d., Ans.

792. To find the price of a lb. from the value of 1 cwt. being given, reduce the price of the cwt. to shillings, and divide by 7, the quotient will give the number of d. there are in a lb.; for 7s. per cwt. is d. per lb. If there be 4s. 8d. over,

it is d. per lb., 2s. 4d. over, is Id.

16 times d. 1 shilling, 8 times ąd. = 6d., 4 times d. 3d Ex. at 31. 6s. per cwt., how much per lb.

12. If a boy can earn 6d. per day, how much is that per year ?

13. At 6 d. per ounce how much per lb. ?

14. At 6s. 8d. per pound, how much per ounce ? 15. At 10d. per lb., how much per cwt.?

795. When the price is any number of pence, the amount may be conveniently found as follows:

1. What will 38lbs. loaf sugar cost at 10d. per lb.

Note. Now it is clear that 381bs. at 1d. per lb. would cost 38d. or 3s. 2d., and that 381bs. at 10d. would cost 10 times as much as 3 lbs. at ld. per lb.

Therefore 3s. 2d. X 10 11. 11s. 8d. Answer.

2. What will 792 yards of printed calico cost as 81d. ?

796. When the price consists of shillings and pence divide the quantity by 12, and multiply the price in pence by the quotient, but taken as shillings, and add in the amount of the price multiplied by the remainder, if any, and you have the

answer.

73 yards of muslin at 1s. 74d.

Explanation, 73 divided by 12, gives 6 and 1 over, = 6s. Id., the price of 73 at Id.; consequently 73 at 191d., must cost 19 times 6s. 1d.; but where two quantities have to be multiplied together, it matters not which is made the multiplier; the same result is obtained by multiplying the 19 or 19s. 6d. by 61⁄2

799. When the quantity is large, and the price under one shilling, the amount may conveniently be found by working from the following table:
