To whom does it apply?
With whom was the Word?
And who was this Word?

2 WHAT is said in this verse?

Did the Word exist before the world was made? In what condition and where did he exist?-Ch. 17:5.

3 WHO made all things?-Col. 1: 16. Rom. 11 : 36. Do you think that the phrase all things, means any more than the things in this world? What can men make?

Can one man create any thing?

Can many men create any thing?

Jer.

Will you repeat some passages which speak of the CREATOR of the world? - Ps. 96: 5. 10:11-16. Heb. 3: 4.

4 WHAT was in him?

Does this mean more than to say he was alive? - Chap. 11 : 43, 44.

Can you repeat some passages to prove, that something beside his power to give life to dead bodies is meant? Heb. 5: 9. Col. 3: 34. Was he a teacher of important truth, as well as the AUTHOR of life? Col. 2: 3.

Were the people to whom Christ came ignorant ? Matt. 4: 16.

What did he bring to light?

5 WHERE did the light shine?

[ocr errors]

2 Tim. 1: 10.

What kind of darkness is here meant ?

Does the Bible ever represent the heart as dark? - Repeat 2 Cor. 4: 6.

Was it by his instructions that Christ became a LIGHT?

Did their ignorance and sin incline them to receive the Savior's instructions?

Do you like to see the truth so clearly as to FEEL that you are very guilty before God?

6 WHAT man was sent from God? What John was this?- Matt. 3: 1.

What do you recollect about this man's preaching?

7 FOR what purpose did he come ?

How did John bear witness of the Savior?
For what purpose did he preach about the Sav-
ior's coming into the world?

8 WHAT did John say of himself?

Who did he mean by the phrase that light? 9 IF the Savior was the true teacher, and the gospel the instruction here meant, have all men been enlightened by it?

What is said of the future extent of his kingdom? - Dan. 2: 44.

Will all nations, then, know the Lord?-Is. 11: 9. 10 WHERE was he?

Did men of that time receive him?

What is it said he made ?

11 WHAT people are called his own? For what reason?

Did they readily receive him?

12 WHAT did he give to those who did receive him? Is this a great privilege ?- 1 Jn. 3: 2.

Do you suppose the privileges of God's children belong to you ?

13 WHOSE children did the Jews call themselves? - Chap. 8: 39.

Did the Jews think that God would save them, merely because they were descended from Abraham?

Well, do you think he will save all Jews on that account?

Will he save You on account of the piety of your parents?

Of whose will were those born, who are really the sons of God?

What influence does the hope that one is a child of God have on his life?- 1 Jn. 3: 3. Have you such a hope as leads you to avoid sin?

LESSON II.

About Christ; and what John said of himself, to the Messengers of the Priests.

CH. i. 14-28.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15 T John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. .16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am

not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

22 Then said they unto him, Who art. thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not:

27 He it is, who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara, beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

To whom did we conclude the term Word was applied, in the last lesson ?

Where did you tell me he was, before the world was made?

What things is it said he made?

14 WHY is it said the Word was made flesh ?Heb. 2: 14.

Tell, in your own language, what you think this

means.

Among whom did the Word dwell, as a man?
What did those persons behold?

What does this mean, do you think? - Luke 7:
14. Matt. 8: 26.

What things did he do, which showed him to be very kind and benevolent ?

15 WHAT did John declare ?

Do you know that John ever healed the sick, or raised the dead, or cast out any devils?

Can you think of some things in which Christ was superior to John ?

Is this what he meant by being preferred before him?

Where was Christ before John was born?—v.1. 16 Or what was Jesus full ?

Of what do all his followers receive?

Did all classes of persons receive favors from him?

Has the Savior promised many blessings to those who love him?- Rev. 7: 16, 17.

Do you receive blessings from God because you deserve them?

Yet, do you not receive favor upon favor continually?

17 By whom was the law given?

Do you recollect any of the circumstances attending the receiving of the law, or the ten commandments, from God?

Was it a favor for men to be informed of the will of God by the law?

Then was it not a much greater favor to know, that Jesus Christ should come from heaven to die for the guilty?

Have you kept all the precepts of the law? What is said of those who fail to keep it perfectly? Jas. 2: 10.

Now can you tell what this verse means? 18 DID any man ever see God?

Can you not tell much more about children
that you have seen, than about such as you
never saw?

You have told me, that Jesus Christ was with
God; did this prepare him to speak about

God, and to teach us his will better than any man could?

What do you think is meant by his being in the bosom of the Father?

Ought you not, then, carefully to regard his declarations about God and heaven?

19 WHOм did the Jews send to question John the Baptist?

What did they ask him?

20 WHO did he confess he was not?

Did many people go out to hear John preach?
Matt. 3: 5.

[ocr errors]

21 WHAT did they then ask him?

Whom did they mean by Elias? - Mal. 4: 5. Do you know whether the Jews expected some prophet would appear before Christ came ? 22 WHAT inquiry did they then make?

Can you tell what was the name of the council
which sent these priests to John?

Will you give some account of this council?
(See Malcom's B. D., article Sanhedrim.)

23 WHAT was John's reply?

What does this mean?- Isa. 40: 3.
What did he call on the people to do?

What in your hearts renders you unprepared
for the blessings of pardon and peace?

24 Or what sect of the Jews were those who came to John?

What do you know of these men ?- Matt. 23: 27, 28.

Do you think such men were prepared to receive the preaching of John?

Can you repeat a passage where John speaks very plainly to them of their wickedness, when they came to hear him preach? - Matt. 3:7.

25 WHAT question did they then ask him?
