not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit:

and ye are clean, but not all. John xiii. 11. For he knew who should betray him : there

fore said he, Ye are not all clean. John xiii. 12. So after he had washed their feet, and had

SECTION XXXII.

Christ sitting at the Passover, and continuing the Conversation,

speaks of his Betrayer.

. 26 This also is a Hebrew phrase. Among the instances collected by Schoet. gen, is a sentiment which ought to be deeply engraven on the memory and the conscience of all who can appreciate the privilege of possessing and studying the Scriptures. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do John xiii. 27. quickly. i.

Now no man at the table knew for what intent John xiii. 28. he spake this unto him.

For some of them thought, because Judas had John xiii. 29. the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

He then having received the sop went immedi- John xiii. 30. ately out: and it was night.

Judas goes out to betray Christ, who predicts Peter's Denial of

him, and the Danger of the rest of the Apostles.

Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, John xiii. 3).
Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glo-
rified in him.

If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify John xiii. 22. him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

29 This part of Christ's address to his disciples has been much misunderstood. From ver. 35, our Lord's intention may be supposed to be, to remind them that all their wants had been hitherto supplied. But now, as he was about to be removed, he forewarns them that it would be hereafter necessary for them to act for themselves, and to provide against danger and difficulty. The disciples interpreted this literally, as appears from ver. 38, when our Lord slightly censures their misapprehension, by “ it is enough," and so closes the conversation. He was about to enter the scene at Gethsemane, and had not time then to listen to, or correct their erroneous inferences, iravóv ési, absurdum est, quod profertis, desinite tam anilia profari. 'Ikavóv ési, eadem est cum 947, sufficit tibi, quæ a Judæis adhibetur, quoties ab altero absurdum quid profertur, qui tacere debebat, &c. &c.—See Lightfoot and Schoetgen, vol. i. p. 313.
