And Jesus, moved with compassion, put 41 forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto 42 him, "I will; be thou clean." And as soon as

he had spoken, immediately the leprosy de43 parted from him, and he was cleansed. And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent 44 him away; and saith unto him, "See thou say "nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew

And the scribes 21 and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who Ps. 32.5. is this which speaketh blasphemies? who can Is. 43. 25. forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus 22 perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, "What reason ye in your hearts? whe- 23 "ther is easier, to say, Thy sins 2 be forgiven "thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? but that 24 ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins," (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) "I say unto thee, Arise, and "take up thy couch, and go unto thine house." And immediately he rose up before them, and 25 took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 32. Jesus on the sabbath day healeth an impotent
man at Bethesda in Jerusalem.

Deu. 16.1.

AFTER this there was a feast of the Jews; A. D. 31. and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there *Lev.23.2. is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a 3 pool, Neh. 3.1. which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, & 12. 39. 3 having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, 4 waiting for the moving of the water.

For an

angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. 5 And a certain man was there, which had an 6 infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, 7" Wilt thou be made whole?" The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down 8 before me. Jesus saith unto him, "Rise, take 9" up thy bed, and walk." And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked and on the same day was the sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful Ex.20.10. 11 for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, Jer. 17.21, He that made me whole, the same said unto &c. 12 me, Take up thy bed, and walk. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto 13 thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? And he that 3 bath. C. 4 messenger. C.

Afterward Jesus findeth him in the 14 temple, and said unto him, "Behold, thou art "made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing "come unto thee." The man departed, and told 15 the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. And therefore did the Jews per- 16 secute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

But Jesus answered them, "My Father work- 17 "eth hitherto, and I work." Therefore the Jews 18 sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that Phil. 2.6. God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, 19
