the judge will come we know not. But he will come suddenly, and his coming will take many by surprise. He tells us that he will come as a thief in the night, that is, when he is least expected. When the judge comes the prisoners will be tried. Every one against whom a true bill can be found, must appear in court; and this will be the case with all, except true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Against them, there will be no indictment; for against them, no charge can be brought. Being justified now, they are justified for ever. But all others will have to stand at the bar to be judged. There will be plenty of witnesses. Every charge brought will be substantiated. The crimes of the life will be arranged, presented, and proved. The sentence of guilty will be recorded. The degree of punishment will be fixed. The dreadful sentence will be published. Published openly. Published in language understood by all. It will then be executed, and executed without delay. Oh what an exposure of man's folly! O what a revelation of his secret sins! For God will bring every work into judgment, and every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Reader, what will the coming of the judge be to you? How would you feel, if the announcement was now made, "Behold, he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see him ?" Would you be cited to appear before

him as a criminal, to give an account of the deeds done in the body? Could you be charged not only with rebelling against God, as the lawful Sovereign of the universe; but with insulting God, as the merciful Saviour of sinners, by refusing to accept of a pardon at his hands? If you should be charged not only with breaking the law, but with shutting your ears to the gospel! If you should be charged with neglecting the great salvation, and choosing death in the error of your way Y! If you should, what excuse can you make for your conduct ? What reason can you assign for your choice? Let me beseech you to lay these things to heart, for God commandeth all men, every where to repent, because he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness, by his beloved Son. Earth and hell, will soon be filled with excitement, and all the inhabitants of heaven will appear to be on the move, and if you ask the reason, "THE JUDGE IS

COMING, THE JUDGMENT IS ABOUT TO BEGIN, THE BOOKS ARE GOING TO BE OPENED, AND MEN WILL BE JUDGED OUT OF THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE WRITTEN IN THE BOOKS, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS. How will it be with you then ?

THE Lord Jesus is put in possession of all things by his Father. As possessing all things, he invites the labouring and heavy laden, to come to him for supplies and rest. He proposes that they should enter his ser vice, and become wholly his. He says, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of mes for I am meek and lowly of heart; andmye shall find rest unto your souls." The yoke symbolises subjection and obedience; he therefore proposes that we should be subject unto him, and obey him; and he holds out this inducement, "My yoke is easy." Matt. xi. 30. Yes, blessed Jesus, we who have proved it, have found it to be easy and pleasant too, therefore we can well recommend thy yoke to others!

The yoke of Jesus comprehends,—the subjection of the understanding to his teaching. We must receive the kingdom of God as little children. We must learn divinity of him.

All he says we must believe, and all that he commands we must do.-The subjec tion of the conscience to his authority. He must be sole Lord of conscience. As cleans

ed by his blood, enlightened by his truth, and sanctified by his Spirit, the conscience must bow to him, be zealous for him, and maintain his honour.-The subjection of the will to his pleasure. We must prefer his will to our own, and make his pleasure ours. In the days of his flesh, he in all things subjected his will to his Father's; and he requires that we subject our wills to his.-The subjection of the heart to his love. His love must inflame, regulate, and elevate the heart. He must become the object of its highest, warmest love. Love to him must rule our thoughts, words, and actions.-The subjection of the active powers to his service. For him the duties of life must be performed. To him every power must be dedicated. His glory must be the end in all things sought. Unless, therefore, we submit the understanding to his teaching, the conscience to his authority, the will to his pleasure, the heart to his love, and the active powers to his service, we do not take his yoke upon us, nor can we testify from experience that his yoke is easy.

The yoke of Christ may be represented by the subjection of the child to its parents, the servant to his master, and the scholar to his tutor. In each case the authority within its proper sphere is absolute. Authority on the one side, and subjection on the other, are the ideas suggested by the relations. The yoke of Christ includes, allegiance to him as a king, reliance on him as a Saviour, confidence

in him as a guide, imitation of him as an example, and attachment to him as to our best friend. Spirit of Jesus, incline each reader's heart to take the yoke of Christ and wear it! O that we may be the subjects, the servants, the brethren of the Son of God!

The yoke of Christ is easy. Compare it with the yoke of Satan, which we wore in our natural state-with the yoke of Moses, as worn by the Jews of old-or with the yoke of superstition, as worn by pagans and papists now. It is easy, because connected with it, for every trial, there is support for every temptation, succour-for every difficul ty, help-for every sorrow, solace for every trouble, tranquillity-for every loss, unspeakable gain-and for every service, a rich and eternal reward. O reader, have you taken the yoke of Jesus upon you? Each one of us must wear some yoke, we cannot be ab solutely free. The alternative is, the yoke of Jesus, or the yoke of Satan, the yoke of the law, the yoke of superstition, or the yoke of some system of errors. Let me beseech you to choose the best, and then I know that you will choose the yoke of Jesus. It is lined with love, it is an honour to its wearer, and will, by and bye, be exchanged for a crown of glory. To you, once more Jesus says, "TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU, FOR MY YOKE IS EASY.'
