him that authority and gentleness, that purity and spiritual discernment, that zeal and meekness, which shall make him an example and guide to the flock; that so making full proof of his Ministry, and continuing in the same, he may both save himself and those that hear him. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for the love of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ Or this:

LORD, to whom all power is given in heaven and in earth; who hast so loved the world, that to redeem and purify sinners Thou didst humble Thyself to the death of the cross, and there shed Thy most innocent blood; Look upon us mercifully, O Lord, Thou only Prophet, Priest, and King to Thine own flock; and grant unto this Thy servant, upon whom we lay our hands in Thy Name [here the Presiding Minister and the other Ministers shall lay their hands upon the head of the Candidate], and whom we thus ordain and set apart to the work of the Ministry, such endowment of Thy Holy Spirit, that he may rightly divide Thy Word, to the conversion of sinners, the instruction of Thy flock, and the overthrow of error and vice. Give unto him, good Lord, Thy grace and wisdom, whereby the enemies of Thy truth may be confounded, the ignorant enlightened, and Thy sheep fed in the wholesome pastures of Thy holy Word. Multiply Thy graces upon him. Comfort and strengthen him in all virtue. Govern and guide his Ministry to the praise of Thy holy Name, the promotion of Thy kingdom, the comfort of Thy Church, and to the spread of Thy blessed Gospel throughout the whole world; and unto Thee, with the Father, and with the Holy Ghost, be all honour, praise, and glory, now and ever. Amen.

¶ Prayer being ended, the newly ordained Minister shall rise, and the Presiding Minister, addressing him, shall say:

IN the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by that authority which He has given to His Church, I do hereby declare you to be ordained to the office of the Holy Ministry [and duly inducted to the pastoral charge of this congregation].

Then the Presiding Minister, and afterward all the Members of the Presbytery, shall take him by the right hand, saying in words to this purpose:

WE give you the right hand of fellowship, to take part of this Ministry with us.

After which the Minister presiding, or some other appointed for the purpose, shall give a solemn CHARGE to him [and to the People].

Then a Hymn may be sung.

¶ Then shall the following or some other PRAYER be offered by the Minister appointed; the People reverently bowing down.

Let us pray.

EVER living God, our heavenly Father, who didst of old time call those whom Thou wouldst for Thy service in the Ministry, and who by Thy providence dost continue to raise up evangelists, pastors, and teachers for Thy Church; Bless, we entreat Thee, Thy servant here set apart to be a Minister [and a Pastor, and the congregation committed to his care]. Endue them with spiritual grace; help them to perform the vows that they have made; and continuing faithful unto death, may they at length receive the crown of life which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give them in that day. Grant this, O Lord, for the sake of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who, with Thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen.

¶ Then the Congregation shall be dismissed with this or some other BENEDICTION, the People still bowing down:

THE peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep

your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

THE ORDER FOR

THE INSTALLATION OF A PASTOR WHO HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY ORDAINED.

When any Minister is to be settled in a congregation, the installment, which consists in constituting a pastoral relation between him and the people of that particular church, may be performed either by the Presbytery, or by a Committee appointed for that purpose, as may appear most expedient.-Form of Government, Chap. xvi, § 4.

¶ On the day appointed, the Presbytery or Committee having been duly constituted, a Minister previously designated shall conduct Divine Service according to the usual Order, or such special Order as the Presbytery may deem proper; and a SERMON shall be delivered by the Minister thereto appointed.

¶ The Sermon being ended, the Presiding Minister shall state to the congregation the design of their meeting, and recite the proceedings of the Presbytery in relation thereto, in the following words, or such other as may be applicable to the circumstances.

DEARLY beloved: The call of this congregation to the

Reverend A. B. to become your Pastor, has been duly presented to the Presbytery of and by them carefully considered. After inquiring into all the circumstances, it has been placed in his hands, and he has signified to the Presbytery his willingness to accept thereof. We are here at this present time by appointment and order of the said Presbytery; and by its authority do now proceed to constitute and install him, in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Pastor of this congregation.

¶ Then the Minister to be installed shall stand before the Presiding Minister, who shall propose to him the following QUESTIONS:

ARE you now willing to take the charge of this congregation, as their Pastor, agreeably to your declaration at accepting their call?

Answer. I am now willing.

Do you conscientiously believe and declare, as far as you know your own heart, that, in taking upon you this charge, you are influenced by a sincere desire to promote the glory of God, and the good of His Church?

Answer. I so believe and declare.

Do you solemnly promise, that, by the assistance of the grace of God, you will endeavour faithfully to discharge all the duties of a Pastor to this congregation; and will be careful to maintain a deportment in all respects becoming a Minister of the Gospel of Christ, agreeably to your ordination engagements?

Answer. I do.

Having received satisfactory answers to all these Questions, the Presiding Minister shall propose to the People the following QUESTIONS, requesting that they answer them in the affirmative by holding up their right hands:

Do you, the People of this congregation, continue to profess your readiness to receive A. B., whom you have called to be your Minister?

Do you promise to receive the Word of Truth from his mouth, with meekness and love; and to submit to him in the due exercise of discipline?

Do you promise to encourage him in his arduous labour, and to assist his endeavours for your instruction and spiritual edification?

Do you engage to continue to him, while he is your Pastor, that competent worldly maintenance which you have promised; and whatever else you may see needful for the honour of religion and his comfort among you?

The People having answered these Questions in the affirmative, the Presiding Minister shall say:

IN

the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the great Head of the Church, and by authority of this Presbytery, I do pronounce and declare that the Reverend A. B., is duly constituted the Pastor of this congregation. Let us therefore pray, dearly beloved, unto God, the Fountain of all grace and glory, that He may be pleased to sanctify with His heavenly blessing this relation of Pastor and People which has now in His Name been established.

Let us pray.

ALMIGHTY God and everlasting Father, who dost gov

ern all things in heaven and earth by Thy wisdom, and hast from the beginning ordained for Thy Church the Ministry of Reconciliation; We thank Thee for Thy goodness to us this day in Thy House: and we beseech Thee to continue Thy loving-kindness to this congregation, and to Thy servant who has now been set over them in holy things. Send down upon him the gifts of Thy Holy Spirit and so replenish him from above that he may rightly divide the Word of Truth; so endue him with purity of life that he may be an example to this flock: and grant that in all things he may faithfully serve before Thee, to the glory of Thy great Name, in the conversion of sinners unto Thee, and the upbuilding of Thy people in holiness and in all Christian service unto salvation.

O Lord God, the Sanctifier of the faithful, visit, we pray Thee, this congregation with Thy love and favour; prepare their hearts to receive Thy Word; enlighten their minds more and more with the light of the everlasting Gospel; increase in them true religion; nourish them with all goodness; and of Thy great mercy keep them in the unity of the Spirit and in the bonds of love; through Jesus Christ our Lord; whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, we worship and glorify as one God, world without end. Amen.

¶ Prayer being ended, the Presiding Minister, or some other appointed for the purpose, shall give a solemn CHARGE to the Pastor, and to the People.

A Hymn appropriate to the occasion may then be sung. Then shall the following or some other PRAYER be offered by the Minister appointed, the People reverently bowing down.

Let us pray.

LORD, our heavenly Father, we beseech Thee not only for Thy favour upon this Pastor and People, but also that Thou wilt bless Thy whole Church in this land, and throughout the world. Gather Thy true people into the
