PROBLEM I.

Shewing the Use of the preceeding Tables in find. ing the Sun's Place in the Écliptic for any given Moment of Time.

Prallice. Let it be required to find the Place of the Sun for An. Dom. 1735, April the Second, at three Hours, twenty-five Minutes, and forty-seven Seconds after Noon. To do this, observe the following Pre

cepts ; viz.

1. Observe, That every Day begins at its own Noon, and that the Roots of the Mean Motions in the Tables are calculated for the Meridian of London, and fitted to the Noon of the Day immediately foregoing the first of January.

2. In every Bissextile (or Leap) Year, after Fe bruary, one Day with its Motions must be added to the Time given.

3. As to the Tables, or Motions themselves, those which stand first, are calculated for a whole Century, viz. from the Year 1701 to the Year 1801, by fix Epochæ or Radical Years, which are distant from each other juft twenty Years, which immediately follow the Radical Years; and these are called the Intermediate or Current Years.

4. The Motions are of the Sun (or Earth properly) and its Perihelion ; and when this Latter is fubstracted from the Former, the Remainder is called the Mean Anomaly ; to this Mean Anomaly in the Table of the Equation of the Mean Motions, there corresponds a Number of Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds, and is called the Equation, because when added or fubftracted to, or from, the Sun's Mean Motion, it

gives the true or equated Place of the Sun in its 0.sir.

5. These Things premised, the Manner of solving this Problem will be as hereunder fet. down.

Whence the true Place of the Sun for the given Time is in the Sign Aries r, the 24th Degree of that Sign, the 12th Minute of that Degree, and the 20th Second of that Minute.

That every Thing may be clear and plain, I shall subjoin an Example of finding the Sun's Place on the 25th Day of November, in the Year of our Lord 1800, precisely at Noon; that Year being a Biffextile or Leap Year.

Hence on that Account, instead of the 25th Day, we must take the Motion of the 26th Day of that Month, and then the Work will stand as below.
