And becaufe the Distances of Places found by Spherical Trigonometry are the Arches of great Circles, and diverse Nations using diverse Meásures to compute the same ; therefore I have fubjoined the following Table of different National Measurés equal to one Degree. 20 In one Degree of a great Cire cle, are | English Statute Miles 691 Italian and Turkish Miles бо 17 80 24 The Stades of China 250 The Inks of Japan 400 I 2 IO 20 : PROBLEM I. P Afornica Mittau To find the Distance between two Cities differing only in Latitude. Practice. In the foregoing Tables, I find the City of Tornia in Lapland to have 650 03' of Latitude, and Mittau in Æ Courland in the Kingdom of Poland to have 57 00' Latitude ; but I find the Longitude of each Place is the same, viz. 44° 00'; therefore I demand the Distance þetween those two Cities? From 66 03 From the Latitude of Tornia Substract the Latitude of Mittau 57 00 There remains the Difference 9 03 That is, in Decimals 9.05 Degrees Multiply that by 69.5 Miles in one Degree. The Product is 628.975, or 629 English Miles very nearly. PROBLEM II. To find the Distance of two Places lying under the Equinoctial. Practice. This is the fame in Nature with the last Problem ; for as there the Difference of Latitude, so here the Difference of Longitude reduced to Miles gives the Answer. PROBLEM III. Having the Difference of Longitude between any two Places on the fame Parallel of Latitude ; to find the Distance and Bearing of each from the other. Pratice. By the Ta P bles, I find Cittadella in the Isle of Minorca hath Cittddella A Seckin 22° 30' Longi А с в tude, and Peckin in China hath A 127° 00'; but are both in the Parallel of 409 North Latitude.
