Minerals.The minerals are gold, silver, and lead, in abundance.

The silver mine of Potosi, the most productive in the world, was discovered by Hualpa, an Indian, by tearing up by the roots a small tree, when climbing up the mountain in pursuit of game, by which the silver ore was uncovered.

Rivers. The principal rivers are the Madeira, Pilcomayo, and Branco.

Lakes.-Lake Titicaca is situated in the western part between the two principal ranges of the Andes, and is 240 miles in circumference.

Soil and Productions.-The soil is generally fertile, and the productions are grain, cotton, and fruits.

Cities. The principal cities are Potosi, La Paz, Oropesa, and Chiquisaca.

The provinces which now compose Bolivia were formerly attached to La Plata. Bolivia was formed into an independent state in 1826.
