Boundaries.-England is the southern part of the island of Great Britain, and is bounded north by Scotland; east by the German Ocean; south by the British Channel and Straits of Dover; and west by St. George's Channel and Irish Sea. Climate. The climate of England is variable, but distinguished for its moisture.

Face of the country.-The face of the country is beautifully variegated, and abounds with elegant scenery.

Minerals. The principal minerals are coal, lead, and tin.

Rivers. The principal rivers are the Thames, Severn, Humber, Medway, and Mersey.

Canals and Rail-Roads.-The canals and railroads are very numerous, and intersect the country in almost every direction.

Islands. The islands are the Isle of Man, Wight, Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, and the Scilly islands.

Soil. The soil is fertile and well cultivated, and produces the different kinds of grain. Cities.-The chief cities are London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, and Bristol.

London, the capital, contains a greater number of inhabitants than any city in Europe.

At Oxford and Cambridge are celebrated universities.

Religion. The Protestant Episcopal Church is established by law, but all religious sects are tolerated.

Rivers. The principal rivers are the Spey, Dee, Don, Tweed, and Clyde.

Islands. The islands are the Hebrides or Western Islands, Shetland, and Orkneys.

Soil. The soil of the greatest part of Scotland is barren and unfruitful, and chiefly fitted for pas. turage.

Cities.-The chief cities are Edinburg the capital, Glasgow, and Aberdeen.

Edinburg castle is built on the edge of a precipice, and is a place of great strength.

In Edinburg is one of the most celebrated medical schools in the world, and there are likewise universities at Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Government. The political government of Scotland is the same with that of England.

Religion The Presbyterian church is established by law, but all sects are tolerated. Length 270 miles, breadth 100: square miles, 30,000. Population, 2,364,000.

Enniskillen Castle on an island in Lough Erne is a place of great strength as a military post, and it is noted for the bravery with which it has been defended.

Government.--The government is the same as that of England.
