Boundaries.-Bounded north by the Arctic Ocean; east by the Pacific and Behring's Straits; south by the Indian Ocean; and west by Europe, the Isthmus of Suez, and the Red Sea.

Climate. The climate of the northern part of Asia is very cold, the middle temperate, and the south extremely hot.

Mountains.-The principal chains of mountains are Caucasus, Altay, Himaleh, and Elwend. Seas.-The seas belonging to Asia are Okhotsk, Japan, Yellow, and China Sea, on the east; the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal on the south; the Red, Mediterranean, Black, Caspian, and Aral, in the west.

Gulfs.-The gulfs are those of Obe, Tungquin, Siam, and Persia.

Straits.-The straits connected with Asia are Behring's, Malacca, Ormus, and Babelmandel.

Rivers. The principal rivers are the Euphrates, Tigris, Ganges, Burrampooter, Yangtse Kiang, Hoang Ho, Obi, Yenesei, and Lena.

Islands.-The islands of Asia are those of Rhodes, and Cyprus, in the Mediterranean; Ceylon, the Sunda Isles; Borneo, Sagalien, the Japan, Philippine, and Spice Islands.

Capes. The principal capes are Taymour, Lopatka, and Comorin.

Religion. The prevailing religions of Asia are Paganism and Mahometanism.

1st, In the north, Siberia, belonging to Russia, and divided into two great governments, Tobolsk in the west and Irkoutsh in the east.

2nd, Middle countries, the government of Caucasus belonging to Russia, Turkey, Persia, Caubul, Beloochiston, Tartary, Thibet, and Japan. sd, The southern countries, Arabia, India, and China.

Length 4,700 miles, breadth 4,400: square miles, 16,000,000. Population, 400,000,000.

Boundaries.-Bounded north by the Northern Ocean; east by Behring's Straits and the Pacific Ocean; south by the Chinese Empire, Independent Tartary, Persia, and Turkey; and west by Russia in Europe.

The northern part of Asiatic Russia is called Siberia. Siberia is divided into two great governments, Tobolsk in the west and Irkutsk in the east. The government of Caucasus embraces the remaining part, situated between the Black and Caspian Seas.

Climate,-Is generally a frozen and barren country, the most northern parts of which are covered with almost perpetual snow. The country between the Black and Caspian Seas has a much more mild and pleasant climate.

Mountains.-The Altay mountains are a very extensive and lofty chain, which separates Asiatic Russia from Chinese Tartary; and the other mountains are Caucasus and Ural.

Face of the country.-The face of the country is generally level, being, with few exceptions, an immense plain, having a gradual descent from the Altay mountains to the Arctic Ocean.

Minerals.-The Russian government obtains great quantities of precious stones, silver, gold, and salt, from the mines of this country.

Seas. The seas connected with Asiatic Russia are the Black, Caspian, Azof, and Okhotsk. Rivers. The principal rivers are the Obe, Yenesei, Lena, Indighirka, and Covima.

Capes. The capes are Anadir, Fodsia, Oleven, and Lopatka.

Soil. The soil of the south and western parts are fertile and productive, but the north and east are dreary and barren.

Cities. The principal cities are Astrachan, Tobolsk, and Irkutsk.

Astrachan, situated on the Volga, 52 miles from its mouth, is a place of extensive trade, and is resorted to by merchants from almost every country in Asia.

Religion. The established religion of the Russian empire is that of the Greek church, but the greater portion of the inhabitants of Asiatic Russia are Pagans.

Length 3500 miles, breadth 1200: square miles, 6,000,000. Population, 10,000,000.
