empire; east by the Sea of China; south by the Sea of China, Gulf of Siam, and Straits of Malacca; and west by the Bay of Bengal.

Climate. The climate is generally pleasant, and not so warm as Hindoostan.

Face of the country.-The face of the country in many places is low and level, and subject to be overflowed by the rivers, but there are some considerable chains of mountains.

This country abounds with elephants, which are very generally employed for conveying burdens, and other purposes.

Rivers. The principal rivers are the Irrawady, Meinham, Thaluayn, Japanese, and Holikian. Length 800 miles, breadth 400: square miles, 600,000. Population, 35,000,000.

Farther India contains the following countries, viz.

1. The Birman empire, the chief cities of which are Ummerapoora, Ava, Pegu, Rangoon, and Prome. Population, 17,000,000.

2. The kingdom of Siam, which has Siam for its principal city. Population, 4,000,000.

3. The kingdom of Laos, nominally subject to Cochin China. the principal towns of which are Langione and Sandipora.

4. The kingdom of Cambodia; chief town of the same name. Population, 1,000,000.

5. The empire of Tonkin, which has the city of Kesho for its capital.

6. Cochin China, the chief towns of which are Kehoa and Faifo.

7. Malacca, which contains several independent tribes. Malacca is the chief city. Population, 10,000,000.

The British are in possession of the country along the whole of the coast of the bay of Bengal. The chief cities are Aracan, Prome, Pegu, and Rangoon.

OCEANA.

Oceana includes the Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is divided into North-western Oceana, Central Oceana, and Eastern Oceana or Polynesia. Square miles, 5,000,000. Population, 27,000,000.

Battle between the Rhinoceros and Tiger. North-western Oceana, or the Asiatic Isles, includes Borneo, the Sunda Islands, Philippines, and the Moluccas, or Spice Islands.

Square miles,1,000,000. Population, 19,000,000. Borneo. This island is 900 miles long, and 600 broad. Chieftown, Borneo. Square miles, 300,000. Population, 3,000,000.

Sunda Islands.-The Sunda or Sumatra Islands are Sumatra, Java, Timor, Floris, and some others of less note.

Sumatra is 1000 miles long, and 200 broad. The principal towns on the island of Sumatra are Bencoolen, Acheen, and Palambang. Square miles, 180,000. Population, 4,500,000.

In this island there is a chain of mountains of nearly equal elevation with the Alps.

Java is 600 miles long, and 100 broad. The chief town is Batavia. The island of Java belongs to the Dutch. Square miles, 52,000. Population, 5,000,000.

The minerals of the Sunda Islands are gold, tin, and diamonds; and the agricultural productions are cotton, coffee, and rice.

The forests contain the Rhinoceros, tigers, monkeys, and other animals.

Philippine Islands.-The principal of the Philippine Islands are Luzon, Mindanao, Palawan, and Samar. The chief town is Manilla. Square miles, 120,000. Population, 3,000,000.

These islands belong to the Spaniards.

Molucca Islands. The Molucca or Spice Islands are Celebes, Gilolo, Ceram, Amboyna, Banda, and some others.

Celebes. The island of Celebes is a large island, east of Borneo. The chief town is Macassar. Square miles, 90,000. Population, 3,000,000. The Spice Islands produce nutmegs and cloves in great abundance, and belong to the Dutch.

Central Oceana includes New Holland, New Zealand, New Guinea, New Britain, and many other islands near them.

The bread fruit tree is found in all the islands; when baked, the fruit resembles new bread.

New Holland is the largest island in the world, being 2,700 miles long, and 1,900 broad. Square miles, 3,000,000.

The British have established a colony on the eastern side of the island called Sidney, at Port Jackson, near Botany Bay, and likewise on Van Dieman's land.

The other inhabitants of Central Oceana are Pagans and savages of the lowest grade. Square miles, 3,500,000. Population, 5,000,000.
