Liberia was selected by the American colonization Society, as the site for a colony of free people of colour from the United States. It was first occupied by about 80 colonists in the year 1821.

Climate and Soil.-The climate is unhealthy to those unaccustomed to it. The soil is very fertile. Productions. The staple productions are coffee, sugar, rice, indigo, cotton, and fruits.

Rivers.-Mesurado is the principal river.
Capes. Mesurado is the principal cape.
Towns. Monrovia is the principal town.

GUINEA.

INTERIOR AFRICA.

Interior Africa is divided into two parts. That part which lies south of the Mountains of the Moon, is called the Desert of Ethiopia, and has never been explored by Europeans.

Interior Africa, north of the Mountains of the Moon, includes the Great Desert, Soudan, and Tacroor.

The Great Desert is situated between the Barbary States on the North; Egypt and Nubia on the east; Tacroor and Soudan on the south, and the Atlantic on the west.

This vast desert of sand is very level, and abounds with salt.

It is interspersed at wide intervals with Oases, or fertile spots, which are inhabited, and where the caravans, which traverse the desert by the aid of camels, stop to rest, and obtain a supply of water.

The islands near the eastern coast ofAfrica, are Madagascar, Socotra, Mauritius, and Bourbon. Madagascar is one of the largest islands in the world, and is inhabited by a mixed race of Arabs and negroes.

Square miles, 230,000. Population, 4,000,000. Socotra lies east of Cape Guardafui, and is inhabited by Arabs.

The Isle of Bourbon lies about 400 miles east of Madagascar; it belongs to France.

Square miles, 2500. Population, 60,000. Mauritius, or the Isle of France, lies about 600 miles east of Madagascar, and is now subject to Great Britain. Population, 70,000.

The principal islands near the Western Coast of Africa, are the Madeiras, Canaries, Cape Verde Islands, the Azores, St. Helena, St. Matthews, and Ascension.

The Madeiras also belong to Portugal. Square miles, 1100. Population, 90,000.

The Canaries are seven in number: Palma, Ferro, Gomera, Teneriffe, Canara, Fuertaventura, and Lancerota. Population, 196,000.

On the Island of Teneriffe, one of the Canaries, is the mountain called the Peak of Teneriffe. The Canaries are subject to Spain.

The Cape Verde Islands belong to Portugal, and are ten in number: St. Antonio, St. Vincent,
