RELIGIONS.

The inhabitants of the earth profess four kinds of religion: Paganism, Mahometanism, Judaism, and Christianity.

Pagans are those who believe in a plurality of gods, and worship idols.

The Mahometans are believers in Mahomet, a pretended prophet, who lived in Arabia 622 years after Christ.

The Jews were the ancient inhabitants of Judea, but are now scattered among every nation on the earth.

The Jews believe in the Old Testament, but not in the New; they consider Christ as an impostor, but expect a Messiah yet to come.

Christians are the believers in Christ.

There are three great divisions of Christians; Roman Catholics, Greek Christians, and Protest

ants.

Roman Catholics obey the Pope, whom they believe to have received his office by continued succession from the Apostle Peter to the present time. They worship before images.

The Greek Christians resemble the Roman Catholics, but do not acknowledge the authority of the Pope.

Protestants disclaim the jurisdiction of the

Pope, and take the Bible only for their guide in religious matters.

Protestants are divided into a great number of sects; among which are Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Baptists, Quakers, &c.

Of the 800 millions of inhabitants supposed to exist on the globe, the number of Pagans is probably 480 millions, Mahometans 140 millions, Catholics 80 millions, Greek Church 30 millions, Protestants 65 millions, and Jews 4 or 5 millions. QUESTIONS.
